Hi, for anyone that has had their horse referred to Newmarket, can you tell me whether the owner has to pay for the cost straight away or they deal direct with the insurance company?

Many thanks ;)

If you have been referred they bill your vet and then they will bill you. If not they can deal with ins but best to double check

Thank you, only on my consent form it says 'for the insured horse, the owner is responsible for the bill and then claim it back from insurance' - isn't this the whole point of having insurance so that we don't get strung for massive vets bills!!?? unfortunately I don't have thousands of ££££££'s lying around! :(

"isn't this the whole point of having insurance so that we don't get strung for massive vets bills"

Not exactly.... Insurance is there to give an owner the security of the money being available to them for treatments, its not an IOU.

Its normal practice IME - there are two contracts going on,one between you and your vet - and the other is you and your insurance company. If you talk to your vets, often they will let you pay in instalments, or they will do a direct claim - but you should never assume that they will just do that (and the insurance companies need a slap IMO - most of the forms say "tick here for us to pay your vets direct" - without pointing out that its curteous to ASK if the vet will do a direct claim or let you hang on a few weeks to get the claim in !!!!! (though maybe they dont think they need to point that out..)

Everywhere Ive ever been with any of my animals is that owner pays the vet, and then claims the money back from insurance company. Not least becuase if the animal turns out to NOT be insured for the problem, the vets shouldnt have to wait!!

Good luck with your horse - Im sure you will be ok, 99% of vets arent unreasonable, they are human too and know that barely anyone walks around with a few thousand in their back pocket !!

We returned from Newmarket a few weeks ago, I didn't have to pay the bill before I left, they send the bill out roughly after 2 weeks and payment should be made shortly after. As soon as I received th bill sent it straight if to the insurers and it was paid very quickly.
Incidentally the bill was just over 3k, and yes all the blurb you get sent does seem to indicate you must pay before leaving, but this was not the case.

Hope that helps.

Horse and I can wear false beards!

It went OK - osteoarthritis in his neck treated with steroid injection. Could have been worse.
He was very pleased to be home - positively barged into his stable!

I'm insured with NFU and unfortunately had three separate trips to Newmarket Equine Hospital ( the one near the racecourse ). On each ocassion they sent me a bill a couple of weeks after my horse was discharged which I then sent on to NFU.

Thanks for your replies!

Eggs did you pay the bill yourself and then claim the fees back yourself or did NFU settle the claim direct to Newmarket?
