We live in a rented house (endorsed by the University) in a lovely area, great parking, shops close by etc etc.
One side of us we have lovely neighbours, always quiet, never a problem.

However on the other side....they have 2 Shih Tzus. And they never, ever, ever shut up.

They bark until the early hours - one night we arrived home from the cinema at 9pm - they started to bark and stopped at 4.30am!
They bark if I turn over in bed. They bark if I go upstairs. They bark at anyone on the street - but once they start they bark for hours on end and then it descends into howling!

Occasionally we do end up screaming 'SHUT THE _____ UP!!!!!' on particularly stressful nights which works for about 10 minutes :o:p (yes the walls are paper thin!) I honestly don't know how they put up with it themselves - who could let their dogs bark all night until that time and not want to throttle them?! They work during the day and are home every night.

I've got a lot of work on and like anyone else, I love a good nights sleep!!
Have I got any grounds to put a note through their door or anything like that seeing as I'm living in rented accommodation for a year only? I feel like I was being cheeky :o

Absolutely what CC says. I would KILL them. Doesn't it drive you crazy? Is it also rented next door? If so, appeal to the landlord-you cannot live like that. Mad on your behalf!

You can ring them as tenants, I think.
There was a case here recently where the people (causing the problem) had to move, they had nine dogs in an end terrace who barked all day, they were recorded barking 2k times in one hour!!!

Oh my God that's insane - I just thank God there's only 2 of them and that they're not big dogs (although not sure what's worse; big barks or small yaps!)
Might have to go a-creeping to landlord tomorrow...no I don't think they're rented next door, I think they own it.
Who can let their dogs bark so much!

I do have a friend with a rescue shi who has awful separation anxiety but she won't crate him because she thinks it is cruel, but it's OK that he is running around the house working himself up into a frenzy, barking his head off....

Ohh no that must be crazy!
Sometimes I swear they are locked into the room next to my bedroom (yay) I'd just be mortified if my dogs barked that early in the morning and that incessantly I think I'd be investigating training methods!

You definitely can complain to the Council who will send someone around pretty quickly - doesn't matter if you or they are tenants, and your landlord doesn't have to do it, you can. If they are barking late into the night it is definitely nuisance. The "Noise Officer(s)" should visit, listen, maybe measure and will probably go right to the owners to discuss - they are usually trained in conflict resolution, etc, so you don't have to get involved.
I would phone Council during the day to discuss the issue, they will probably then tell you to phone them when barking starts at night.

Good luck, you - and probably a lot of the other neighbours - have a right to peace and quiet. I also think dogs that are barking chronically are pretty stresed and need attending to also, not just being ignored by their owners.

Yeah I know, I do feel sorry for them in a way.....but not when I'm trying to work and its constant! I will try that, thanks
