Leviathan(on phone, can't quote) yes,of course and I completely agree-I'd be well peed off if it was happening to me and I also agree with CC ^^^ here- I care far too much about mind to let them roam like strays.
My point was that all these 'Shoot it/someone else'll shoot it!' replies didn't seem to account for the poor dog,who unfortunately for him,has *****e owners and deserves better.
I also feel for the OP-difficult situation. If it was me and I didn't go and have a sterner word and then something happened to me/child/dog/cyclist etc I'd never forgive myself for dithering a bit due to delicate nature of situation - sometimes you just need to bite the bullet (I know it's easier said than done, esp by others who aren't 'living' it) If you really lay it out for them, whilst being ultra polite and saying you hope you're being a good neighbour by telling her he nearly got run over/stolen/handed in to dog warden (by 'others'/strangers,let's say, whom you persuaded to let you hold him in your stable instead) then surely they can't fall out with you?
I'd do a once-and-for-all chat where I knew I'd completely said my piece (nicely but firmly and without ambiguity) and if that fails,I'd start reporting him as loose dog to dog warden.
