Apologies if this has been around before, but it's just cropped up on my facebook:

Pic is apparently Russian c. 1912, obviously Imperial Army apparently "demonstrating the application of a forward seat"...

Personally, I think it's an awesome photo and the horses must have been very well trained.

New one for Badminton this year, maybe? :D

D'you know, I never even thought of that... They must've rigged something up on the other side so they could take it as steps onto the roof, surely?

Or the building is set into a hill? What I wondered was, what is that roof made of?!? Could do with construction like that round us when the wind picks up!;)

Must be something like that - otherwise it's one huge step up :eek:

Exactly

True, you can see so little of the surroundings, it could be!

Jeeeez.

Have you guys never heard of a trampoline????!!!!

:D

I really, really hope this is the real answer :D

As the doors and windows are painted on it's a solid object with bits added to make it look like a house, so really a glorified bank. I suspect there was another "outbuilding" at the back to make two steps up:)

This would make the most epic fence ever- wonder how much tweaking it would take to make it BE/ FEI legal?

Durrrr.

I'm a bit thick, I didn't even notice the painted windows and door!

eta, Lolo, i couldn't agree more!

Who wouldn't buy a photo of their horse jumping off a house?

My ideal job would be a course designer. I think my bent for stuff like this means everyone should be grateful I'm not one!

Well you East Angular ladies, email the photo over to Tina at Ely Eventing. She's a course builder in her own right and you might just end up with soemthing that you could attempt locally:D

Between you and me, we could design the ultimate in awesome, but mental course :D

I thought the chimney pots looked a bit odd ;)

They look like they've been drawn on the photo post facto

errrr, J.A. I don't want to die  :D

^^ This! It would be epic :D

Don't know but we would soon find out if ely had one.....

And I nominate you to take my pony round what ever you create

I have it on good authority that this was a purpose made obstacle (as someone said the windows are merely painted on, and is that a real person?) for training the Hussars.

Even so, quite a leap off :)

This is the quote from the picture I have of it :

These are the 12th Hussars of the Russian Imperial Army, c. 1912 demonstrating an "early application of the Forward Seat." This is an image from a book in the museum's library, "Riding Forward: Modern Horsemanship for Beginners" written in 1934 by Vladimir Littauer, Captain, 1st Hussars, Russian Imperial Cavalry.

Worth a look, there are some fabulous pictures.
