My claim has been paid
Thanks to advice on hear I spoke to NFU, explained why I was so unhappy and asked for the file to be brought back 'in house'. Less than 1 week on and they called me yesterday to say they have accepted the claim and the cheque is on the way to my vet. They also said that if I need to claim in the future I can request that it stays with NFU and is not passed on to the loss adjusters. So thanks for all your replies last week, I had no idea I could ask them to call it back so your experiences were really helpful.
