Hello. I have my horse insured with NFU mutual. They offer 24hrs horse recovery with the policy. Which I thought was good. But in the small prints, it says that I need to pay for the actual cost of the recovery and if you need over night stabling and so on, I will need to pay for that too.
Has anyone got experience of using their horse recovery? How much did it actually cost?
I am thinking to have horsebox and trailer associations cover as well as they will provide everything free?
Thank you.

Do you mean horsebox recovery?
If so I have it alongside their horsebox insurance and it was the recovery that bumped the premium up. Im sure it was about £180 to £200.
I asked for a lower level of cover as its unlikely Id ever be far away enough to need overnight stabling. They said the cover was one level and overnight stabling was included as standard.

We have horsebox insurance and breakdown with Anthony D Evans. When we broke down on the M4, the recovery service they sent was great. Towed our box home, waited while we unloaded and sorted our horses out, then took the lorry to the garage of our choice. The recovery driver was really considerate about the horses on board while he connected us up and took us home. Total annual insurance cost for a 7.5 ton box was £300 for any driver over 25 including breakdown. Can't recommend them highly enough.

My trailer breakdown cover was really cheap with NFU when I added it to my existing vehicle and trailer insurance- about £15 more or something. I did breakdown in December and got the trailer patched up and the horse taken home by recovery lorry. I got sent the bill and it was about £400/£500 I think and the NFU is paying it (I hope!!!!)

Hi, thank you for reply!>Louby, Jenni999 and Dogstar

Sorry to been not very clear on this.
I have a trailer which is covered for theft with NFU
but a car insurance is not with NFU.

But NFU horse insurance's website,
says "We do provide a 24 hour Equine Rescue Service."
So I rang them up and asked what happens if
I have a pancture on one of the wheels on my trailer with a horse in it.
They said, they will send someone to take horse to saftey,
but I have to pay for everything. (Horse transport, fixing wheel etc)

Still not sure what i should do with extra cover or not.....:-S

My horse is insured with them too, Ive never noticed that in the policy. Suppose it could be used as a last resort and is handy to have if you cant get any one else to rescue your horse.
RAC do a trailer recovery, if thats what you are worried about.

With the NFU policy if you don't take it up you still have it there in the back ground but on PAY ON USE.

I use www.equinerescue.co.uk

They come out repair lorry or if it cannot be repaired then will send out separate horse transport to take you and your horses home. Your broken lorry then gets towed empty which is the correct and legal way to do it.

Unlike the other company mentioned on here!

Have found it cheaper to insure trailer with company who we have our horse insured with and get seperate breakdown cover. Trailer association told me they cover car and trailer whilst towing and 'its one call does it all'. Will sort out transport for horse, arrange for police to close road for unloading etc if necessary. Think its about £45 pa if you are already an AA member. Hope I never have to use them but would certainly take away some of the stress in a breakdown situation.

The BEST and most comprehensive cover you can get for box/trailer rescue cover is with the RAC and PRP.
Your correct in thinking NFU charge, and the price varies considerably, having been stung by them myself.

However I now have the full fleet on RAC rescue, the trailer/equine cover is an additional £45 per year on top of your personal cover - and is worth every penny!
Well worth looking into, more so now that it also includes a free nights stabling if required.
Should you be unfortunate and have a breakdown, PRP are sent to the scene along with the RAC patrol, and between them your issues are sorted immediately without any hassle. I speak from experience having used them a number of times for various vehicles over the last couple of years.
