NFU INSURANCE DISGUSTING !

I do seem to remember about a year ago a number of people were having problems with claims with this insurance company as they had ooutsourced their claims department to another organisation. The claims that they dealt wiith themselves wher processesd efficiently but the ones they outsourced took more time to progress.

Having worked in pet insurance, I can see where they are coming from about not mentioning the points but thats really neither here nor there, as I havent the full facts to form a correct opinion :)

Any how, First your friend needs to go through her Ts & Cs with a fine tooth comb.

Then she needs to write a letter asking them to explain why they rejected her claim

If she is not happy with their reply, she needs to write another letter to higher up in the company - usually there is a separate complaints department

If the answer here is not satisfactory, then your friend goes to the ombudsman.

The compaints procedure will be clearly set out on the Ts & Cs. Unfortunately the Ombudsman will not look at your case until the full complaints procedure has been met :)

There is not really enough information to assess clearly what is going on, but irrespective of T&Cs they might have hidden in there the law requires any contract to be "reasonable". I would after review of T&Cs and speaking to complaints departments/ombudsmen, contact a solicitor who specialises in equine work. A letter from a solicitor who's name they recognise can often do the trick!

Did she tell the horsebox insurance about the points? If not then I can only see that NFU are claiming that she was driving without valid insurance, hence them now not paying up.

^^^This

Speaking as a person who has changed from NFU to Petplan due to them more than doubling my horses premiums after years of insuring with them and only one minor claim a few years ago. NFU used to be great, now they SUCK.

I have no views on these particular circumstances, but should say that NFU have been pretty magnificent with me. They paid out last year on my horse for a fractured pedal bone and a colic claim. One was probably caused by the drugs used to treat the other, but they went on the advice of my vet and considered them separate incidences - they paid over £8k in medical bills, plus her value when she was PTS, plus another £500 for her box rest costs. I would say it took them a while via the company they outsourced to, but they were very reasonable. I've since put in a new claim for my other mare, which they have paid without question and very quickly.

I just felt some balance to the thread title was required, as I have a feeling we are not in possession of the full facts.

As for self insuring - I'd have had to find about £14k in the last year, over and above any excesses I already paid. At combined premiums of £50/month, that would have taken me 23 years to set aside.

LMAO that was last year, wonder what it will be this? My quote was for over £54 per month for 1x 18yo cob who has been insured with them since she was 6yo and only had one claim of £50!!!!! My premium cost literally would have more than doubled!! Hence why I have gone with Petplan and got my 3rd Party via BHS Gold Membership.

I'm with insurance my horse and they have been fab.

All friendly, helpful staff. Cheap policy prices and re-newal doesn't increase despite over 1500k claims.

Paid out with no issues despite me messing it up :) and very helpful when I added an additional cover.

They aren't as well known but they certainly seem to out perform all these better named companies who over charge.

I went for a quote for my vehicle and it was £40 per month more expensive than last year!!! Whats that about? I dont even go to them for horse insurance as its sooo expensive. Def gone down in my books, which is a shame!

I seem to be one of the lucky ones with NFU - a big claim last year (£3k) which was settled very quickly and efficiently, and my insurance has only gone up by £10/month for this renewal, which was in Jan. Seems very odd how some people are being hammered with huge increases and others don't really get affected

They do ask you if you've got any criminal convictions (not sure why ....) and motoring offences do count as a criminal offence so this might be why as with all insurance if you provide false information (saying you have no convictions when you do) voids your insurance. xxx

I have insured with NFU for quite a while and had no problems whatsoever with 2 separate claims involving the same horse - they paid out straight away direct to the vets (both claims individually were around £2.5k) this was 3 years ago though!

Speeding is not (yet) a criminal offence, nor is lack of seatbelt, nor using a phone.
Some other motoring offences are criminal tho - DD etc

Not sure if I've missed it, but maybe NFU are grasping at straws 'if' the lady had not declared the points to the lorry insurer, then they will want to see all paperwork as if you dont declare 1 thing to an insurer then another insurer is going to be very careful....

Sounds an odd case tho

I've only been with NFU 2 years, currently have a claim going through (first lot paid up straight away!) regarding a lameness investigation. I've found them straight forward, hassle free and very willing to help.

Correct! NFU have no legal reason to pay out at all! The horse in their reasoning was injured in a horse box driven by herself with points on the licence and not declared.

Just like all the illegal horse transport that goes on between 'friends' for sharing lorries/trailers etc and paying 'diesel money'. You are not covered!

You are also not covered if our horse box is towed with your horse on board (very topical at the moment with another thread!)

Been saying this for years!

This really shows that anyone transporting anyone else's horses should have an operators licence. I wonder how many 'pro' riders competing owner's horses have an operators licence? If not are our horses covered by insurance? Food for thought!

I have been with NFU for over 18 years, had a few claims and never a problem, the breakdown cover is excellent. Expensive maybe but everything has gone up lately.

For my horse & trailer insurance, I couldn't recommend NFU enough! I had my trailer stolen, they paid out in 3 weeks, I have just claimed for my horse due to colic and the claim has been accepted and all costs inc transport, livery etc are being paid.

However, for my car insurance i am extremely disappointed. Having been a loyal customer for years, 10+ years NCB, an old 4x4 which no-one in their right mind would nick and a clean licence, they have sent me letter for the renewal next month and it has doubled, increased by £400, ridiculous  i will insuring the car with someone else!

A few years back on an exceptionallly stupid day i parked my 4x4 and left the handbrake off. I was at work and the farmer who i rented my workshop off quickly banged in a claim for just under £1800 . the jeep had hit a door and slightly bent it.. the door was old and long past its best anyways. It had been quickly mended with a crowbar and the damage was very very slight. when my insurance company told me they said they would pay out as they didnt inspect anything under £1800. I told them to send the farmer a letter to say they would send an assessor out to view the damage and guess what? He never got back in touch.
These are the people that made insurance companies awkward to claim from and pushed premiums up.

NFU Insurance - No ******* Use Insurance.

I went into my local branch 12 yrs ago to get a quote for insurance - forms etc completed and I'm still waiting for my call back with my quote. Do you think I might get a call soon? I don't often get my blood up about anything on this forum, but I wouldn't touch NFU with a barge pole.
And as for the person who said that they've had a £3k claim and their insurance has only gone up £10 a month - that's ludicrous. I had around £13k - £15k (I won't add it up as I don't want the true figure) of claims with Petplan in the last 18 months. My policy went up £2 per month.

Motoring offences are not classed as criminal convictions UNLESS you have been to court and been convicted AT COURT.
Normal speeding/ seatbelt etc are not criminal convictions if a fixed penalty notice was issued.
It maybe that the points issued to this lady were issued after court proceedings and thats the issue with NFU as you quite rightly point out above!

We have been with NFU for years. The horses, house, lorry and cars are all insured with them. They've always settled quickly and haven't slapped exclusions on either. Yes the premiums have gone up, but I expect other companies have also gone up in price. I ve always found them excellent to deal with.

I think I may scream if I read another 'well I've claimed £xxxxx and my insurance only went up by diddle squat, when the fookers more than doubled mine with no fooking claim!!!!

I'm still not convinced we are getting all the story I have a criminal conviction and undisclosed points on my licence when I had an accident 2 years ago and ok it was not nfu but my car was still covered it was towing my horses at the time.
My premius however did go up
