I am looking to get NFU insurance for one of my youngsters. He's a WB yearling and I'm only covering him for the sum of £800 to cover his stud fee. Called NFU who quoted £301 p.a. for Death, Theft & Straying, Vets fees and £1.5m Public Liability cover only. Woman taking the quote wasn't familiar with taking horse quotes so although I stressed he was only at grass and not going to shows or anything, not sure whether I got the correct quote. Does anyone know if NFU do a cheaper cover for young horses simply 'at grass'? £301 seems quote a lot. I am sure I pay that for my riding horse/broodmare valued at £3k.

When my mare was 2 I enquired about basic cover and the basic cover is (i think) section A which covers for riding club activities showing etc etc. I couldn't find anything that was just for a horse in a field!!!

With NFU Mutual the Class 1 cover (lowest) covers at Grass and other uses including Hunting, Novice eventing etc. The premium she has quoted is correct (give or take a couple of pounds) but the liability is £2.5 million as we do not do £1.5 million. It you want to discuss cover (work for them) P.M me.

Have decided to go with PetPlan. Have insured him for £1500, and as being "At Grass", for £16.19 pcm (is £178.18 pa). Got £5k vets cover for EACH unrelated claim (w only a £115 excess), plus £1m TPty & the usual death, theft & straying cover.

Was really pleased to have found this cover for him.

That's great. I'm with Pet plan but unfortunately was 2 months too young to get cover at grass so am paying that amount for a lot less

Well it's reassuring that PetPlan seem to have a good reputation. I'm normally with NFU and only had to claim the once in 8 years, but that was this March when my broodmare almost tore her front hoof off. She had to have it put in cast and 6 weeks box rest. Everything was covered by NFU, including the increase cost to keep her on full livery at the stud where she lives at the moment. They paid really fast without so much as a query. Pity they don't do a more competitive 'grass keep' cover for babies. Still, hopefully PetPlan will need my needs for the next few years.
