I tried to get a quote from NFU but they said they could only quote if I sent them a copy of a current 5 star vets report. The report I had from buying was 12 months old and they said that wasn't acceptable. I'm not going to pay for another vetting when I don't need one. Has anyone else come across this or do you think I wasn't being given the right info?

I didn't when I insured with them last year. She was previously insured with Equestrian Direct (without a certificate) for a year, so not a'new' horse to insure as such.

Maybe it's something to do with value, I paid and therefore insured mine for very little.

maybe wrong info, i insured with them over 4 years ago and didnt need a certificate, he wasnt vetted anyway because i loaned him off a friend then bought him.

It depends on if you have had insurance with someone else for the last 12 months. If not then they would be suspicious of why you are suddenly taking it out now. A lot of companies would be the same. However if you had only just bought the horse I know South Essex do not need vet certificates under (I think £5000)

I got insurence with NFU last week, they wouldn't insure him until they'd seen a copy of his 2 stage vetting certificate but he is a new horse and the vetting had just been done. They basically said that because I'd had the vetting done I had to show them it but if I hadn't then I wouldn't if that makes sense! (Although if I had taken out insurence and said he hadn't been vetted and then in the event of a claim it came out that actually I hd had him vetted it would make the policy invalid). Ponio is worth under 2k though and there was no request for a 5 stage.

I think it will depend who you phone, if you phone the 'nationwide' number I think u will need a certificate, if you phone your local branch office, I don't think you will need a certificate

I insured Bentley for vets fees, liability incase he damages anyone/thing, and in the event of his death. None of my tack is insured and he is not covered for loss of use (didn't see the point as he doesn't actually have a 'use' at the moment anyway!! I told them I only paid £1500 for him and that he hadn't been vetted when I brought him and it wasn't a problem- therefore I assume your horse must be considerably more valuable

The premium is £33/month.

I insured a horse with them last year who previously belonged to my mum and didn't have insuance (but as I was becoming responsible for him I wanted to insure him). They asked for the vetting cert which was about 10months old and they accepted that. He was insured for 4k death/theft/vet fees if that makes a difference.

I can understand your dillema. Have you tried Petplan? I've heard they're quite good and quoted me a similar price to NFU for a £1k horse this year. They didn't require vet cert.

I swapped a couple of my horses to NFU last year. They were previously with a different company although my others are with NFU.

No problem with one of them (value just under £5k) but needed a recent 5-stage vetting for my other (value £8k) was a bit concerned about how to do this with a just backed and turned away youngster and spoke to my vets (who I had used for all her life - only had vaccs done, no illness, etc). They said they would do an 'insurance' vetting which was cheaper than a 'purchase' vetting and allowed us to lunge her rather than ride. NFU were happy with this as my vets were also able to provide her full medical history.

Thanks all, I didn't even get to talk about values, they asked me my name and then if I had a vets certificate as their under writers would need it before they could quote me, maybe I just spoke to the wrong person, I'll definitely try my local branch as think I dialled the national number, will see what they say, I just wanted to double check if it was a standard response

i insured my new girl with them in November. Although i have had an equine policy with them for approx 8years now they only wanted a valuation by a qualified person (eg BHSAI etc) but thats becuase her value is way more than what I paid for her so they needed proof she was worth what I was saying (I only paid £5 for her!) I do though always speak and deal with my local branch
