My NFU insurance arrived today 1st year of renewal and I have been dreading it, reading some posts on here regarding massive hikes. Im actually pleasantly surprised £30 discount for renewing and comes in at literally just couple of quid more than last year per month. Im sure it will be bigger jumps as Honey gets older but for now she is 8-9 yrs and im happy with it. Thought Id share something positive!

You are lucky. I have been with them for over 12 years and this year it was a 44% increase. Needless to say I am leaving them.

Also I have a vet claim with them and they have not paid it, when I phoned to find out why they tell me they have a 6 to 8 week backlog. They have always paid out very quickly in the past.

I'm hoping they don't hike up my house and contents insurance which are due next month as that insurance is so complicated and time consuming to get quotes for.

Mine didn't increase a huge amount either. And SEIB and Petplan were LOADS more when I called around. KBIS only £10 less and wated her vetted!!

My OH works a lot in insurance and reckons they are refining the number of horses they insure, hence why some people are being priced out.

Yes I had a double whammy discount the year before last as it was their 100th anniversary or something. I was pleasantly surprised at getting £120 off.

Even more surprising was getting my horse revalued as a ten year old in 2007(felt he was undervalued at the time) for the sum of £7K, from the original purchase price of 5K and only having to pay an additional £81 in premium. So for an extra £2K worth of pay out should the worse happen and he was destroyed on humane grounds I thought it was well worth it. Of course I had to pay £186 for a five stage vetting. But at the time circumstances dictated the possibility of trouble on the horizon (introduction of new horse to herd in the winter) I felt it was a small price to pay for piece of mind as I was concerned he might die. (Sounds dramatic but lost four in under seven years so slightly paranoid!!).

As it happened he was okay and this year (Jan 11) on renewal I decided to swing back to the pre 2007 valuation as I didn't feel they would pay out £7K for a 14 year old anyway, and of course is saved me a small fortune on my ever increasing premium (as everyone found this years insurance renewals were sky high).

Good feedback about NFU here, I'm looking to move from petplan to them. Can you guys give any more positive and negative feedback... Much appreciated (:

I believe their claims department are struggling. They have over four weeks backlog on assessing claims, which is a nightmare when you are not told whether you are covered for a claim or not. Its all well and good having exclusions on the policy so you know what's what from renewal, but the problem comes about from previous problems you may have encountered with your horse and then it can cause a problem as the insurance companies like to check the horses entire veterinary history. Its so easy to forget what treatment your horse has received five, six or even seven years ago, if it is not major treatment, for example a kick that required stitches maybe, or a call out to a late night colic incident. It may have been a major drama at the time, but it pales into insignificance over a period of many years and is easilly forgotten. These things you wouldn't claim on because the excess is more than the bill, but its still happened and it still goes on their record. And then that's where the insurance company snares you!!

They paid out quickly on my 'pts on humane grounds' for my previous wobblers boy, but then so did Pet Plan on my previous three 'death on humane grounds'.

All in all I am delighted with their service (NFU).

I have nothing but praise for them, i've had lots of claims and nothing but bad luck. But they have paid out quickly. My new horse has just been diagnosed with Ringnone in both coffin joints, in the past both entire front legs would be excluded, now it's per condition which must be more expensive for the insurance company, it is better for us but someone has to pay for it. If we all did what we are suppose to do and inform our insurance company of all illness or accidents, no matter how small the history wouldn't need to be sort. But we don't if it's not over the excess. And they wouldn't be able to cope with all the calls, horses being horses there is always something.

Lucky you! I've left them after my insurance went sky high despite no claims. Was not impressed and told them so! They really don't seem to actually want the customers.
