A few people have recommended NFU for horse Insurance. I rang for a quote but was told unless I had other Insurance with them then they could not quote for a horse, is that normal? bizarre....

From what I have read Horse insurance is a bit of a minefield, most of the current companies have good and bad reports so I guess its just a gamble.

The NFU loose money on their horse insurance buisness so they now only insure horses where they carry other policy's for the owners .
I have just had a meeting with them and this subject came up.

i insure with nfu and you dont need to have any other insurance with them, but you can get a better deal if you add house insurance etc.

i ust renewed my insurance with them yesterday and hold no other policies just the horse ones (and they were way cheaper than the others i quoted)

I set up a horse policy with NFU in August this year. They did ask me if I had any other policies with them and I said no. She then told me my Mum had a policy with them (which I didnt know!) So maybe that is why they let me have a horse only policy.

Yes they started doing it a few years now, I originally had horse ONLY and then tractor, now dog and tractor. At first I thought they were just being a wee bit over enthusiastic for business, but I agree they probably are so good at what they do(ie they paid up immediately and settled vet bills direct etc for my horse a few years back) that they need to get other business to keep it all afloat etc. I do like NFU but for car and house do shop around, they arent the cheapest but very efficient at dealing with claim.

I was horrified at premiums when I asked for a quote for a little coblet 7 years it was about £400 + for basic..he was a mongrel pony too! or scrub type!

If this is the case then they are being a bit naughty not saying on their website that they are only offering horse insurance to people who already have another insurance with them as it must waste a lot of people time not just people making enquiries but staff also having to tell them they can't insure them unless they take up another insurance product.

I am with NFU but got my insurance about 5 years ago. Their dog and cat insurance must be new as I dont remember then having those available when my sister was looking for dog insurance.
