I am a current member, but for certain reasons I am using this name. So sorry for this.. I don't like it but it is necessary.

I have a horse who has progressivly got nastier and more agressive over the last few months. her back is fine, her teeth are fine, her saddle is fine. We have had her on oestress to see if it is a hormonal problem.. no response.

Shes been on a gastric supplement thinking she had ulcers, no change.

I want to get her scoped for the gastric ulcers as the problem seems to be in the gut region. I also want full bloods and urine screening.

She is scoury, she urinates a lot more than any horse I have ever met. She is stressed all the time. shes looseing condition, and shes started to loose shoes.. I know this could be the ground not her hoof quality.

My NFU policy states

[ QUOTE ]
Will not pay for investigation into or treatment of behavioural problems unless directly related to a physical condition covered by your polity

So my question is.. would I be covered to get her scoped and blood tested, as its a possible medical reason or not do you recon?!

Im sure some of you will know who I am buy now but.. The ones who do.. I wont mind knowing.

Bit of a chicken and egg situation. You won't know if the behaviour is caused by ulcers until you have her scoped. Unless you treat her for ulcers anyway and see what happens. Have you talked to the NFU? I think most of the advisers are horse owners. I am having a claim at the moment and the advisers are very sympathetic and even told me that I could claim for something I hadn't even thought of.

But if you are scoping for the scouring, urinary, loss of condition, etc, then one could argue, it's nothing to do with behaviour?

I would suggest contacting NFU, telling them you are having her scoped for ulcers and also blood tested for white cell count - and you may or may not be claiming.

Neither will cost an arm and a leg, so if they won't pay out it's not the end of the world - however, if it turns out they will then they've been notified of the procedures and tests.

Not called them yet. I need to consider my options. Im awaiting a call back from the vet to discuss the issues we are facing. Its just another pile of rubbish Ive got to deal with. Id hoped that after a 2008/2009 year from hell, that I might of actually been able to finally have a horse and enjoy it...

Maybe not ay..

Well my policy paid out (not NFU) for ulcers and all I had to go on was a reluctance to showjump! I got a 'loss of performance' workup done, and that was a pretty standard procedure for the vets I used.

If it helps, gastroscopy at the vets costs about £200 including sedation etc and the bloods are under £100 - I had bloods etc done before I went down the gastroscopy route.

I have only decided today to contact the vet. So once Ive spoken to the vet Ill be straight onto the NFU with the way forwards.

Its just stressing me out.

Thanks for all your imput. It is much appreciated.

Sally do you know what the cost of scoping generally are?

I thought that was also a possibility Bailey.

Just have to wait on the vet now.

Thanks peeps!

No - but I wouldn't expect that or the blood tests to come to more than £500
