hey, what’s your advice on which insurance?
currently have a quote from NFU, expensive but doable.
Renewal came through from petplan. Added £300 and I haven’t even claimed.

seib I have heard of but not sure on rep.
Any advice?

Ps.. Petplan have exempt anything to do with gastric even tho she had a clear scope.. tired of arguing with them.

Also I am considering getting BHS membership and taking what it covers off of my insurance policy. Opinions?

SEIB have a good reputation - we insured with them for years. KBIS are another possibility. But I have to say since DD stopped high level competitions we no longer insure for vets fees, loss etc. I have 3P liabilty through BHS gold. Tack and kit is covered under the household insurance. We started by putting the equivalent sum aside into a savings account in case of vets fees - but the sum grew so large I stopped and now it just sits there. Obviously its a gamble and if there was a big cost early on then you need a credit card or similar to cover. But it is definitely a gamble I am currently winning on.

I use BHS for the 3rd party and public liability cover.
Don't do anything like tack cover or loss of use.
Was with SEIB for 1st year, didn't need to claim.
Had 2 claims with KBIS (congenital false nostril cyst removal and then a big ol' gash to a hind leg), all paid up fine, changed due to excessive exclusions.
Had 2 claims with NFU (sarcoid surgery and then allergy/intradermal skin testing), paid up fine, changed as the renewal was hefty.
Currently back with SEIB this year, as they had the most sensible premium for me this year.

She remains excluded for Sarcoids, Skin Conditions, Cysts and Respiratory issues (because she had a temporary cough post sarcoid surgery, and we scoped to check she hadn't inhaled something during surgery as her breath stunk, so yep, I feel you there, seems a bit unfair but hey ho!)

To be honest my boy is a clean slate so I don’t mind paying for insurance for him. However if the exclusions made it pointless then I would go back to putting money in a savings account. I’m with Petplan and it was the cheapest. Having been with KBIS before I would say they are a good company. Scottish equestrian I wouldn’t touch with a barge pole. Terrible company to deal with.

Just check before looking to move companies,my sons pony is insured with NFU - only for £3000, no tack or loss of use and last year I thought his had gone up a lot especially having never claimed anything.I decided to do a look round for new quotes and they were all around the same price-some a little cheaper BUT they all wanted a 5 stage vetting as pony 11 years old.
The 5 stage vetting was going to cost me way more than what his policy with NFU had gone up by so stayed with NFU as I also got more from that policy.

I have BHS gold membership to cover my veteran mare. I used to be with NFU. Thought price was ok but I have never claimed so cannot give any experience of that.

I had £18k out of my insurance so it was money well spent. However this renewal came round, I had a debate with the underwriters, and decided I was spending a lot of money for not a lot of cover especially when they couldn't even be bothered to tell me what her exclusions were.
So I've now insured on a veteran plan as it covers enough for injuries plus my third party liability and I'm putting the difference into clearing off her last lot of vet bills then savings.
I went with SEIB as I have my horsebox with them and they seemed to have good reviews.

I used to be with Shearwater and always found they were very helpful when it came to renewal, finding me a good deal (Sometimes changing things like the excess to get it cheaper).

I stopped insuring when horse got old and there were too many exclusions.
