Has anyone got a Veteran policy with NFU just looking at 23 year old gelding on loan, the owner has given me his policy that he's had for 12 years its £648 a year he's insured for £500 and Vet fees accident only at £3000 and personal accident. Not insured for illness disease or condition. The owner is keeping this in her name is this correct surely if I was to make a personal claim it could prove tricky? I currently have a BHS gold membership for my other oldie and just pay my vet as I go. Are there another companies anyone can reccomend?

NFU stands out amongst the rest for their great policy cover and customer service. And they are more expensive than others for that reason.
But given that this policy is limited to accident only , and if it is in the owner's name I don't think covers you, this is a lot of money.
At his age, would the owner or you put him through colic surgery or any other surgery? Or if he had a terrible accident which resulted in expensive treatment, would his owner put him through that or just PTS?
Those are the things I would consider with an older horse. As if you weren't prepared to put him through invasive or stressful treatment , i would just have a public liability cover. I use World Horse Welfare for that.
I'm a huge believer in insurance otherwise, I've had over 15 grand worth of treatment paid out over the past few years . But i don't think I would bother with a veteran policy as my circumstances mean that if the horse needed some treatment, x-rays etc I would be able to pay for those.

I wouldn't be putting him or my horse under colic surgery at this age. I just think if I'm paying for a policy then it should be in my name and say if he was to die (God forbid) who would get the £500?

I think the owner of the horse should pay for insurance otherwise anyone could insure someone else’s horse and get money for it when it’s dies. You need to agree with the owner what you and they pay for. If I were the owner I’d keep it insured under my name and paid for myself. I’d have public liability for myself. You may wish to Also discuss this with the insurers as otherwise you might not be covered at all should a claim be made. Having said that I no longer insure my oldie as it’s too expensive and he is unlikely to be put through any major treatment.
You should also agree who pays any excess and if no longer insured how much you’d be willing to pay before the owner has to start covering vet fees.
