I know the 'traditional' way of dealing with this. I am curious as to the NH way of dealing with this.
10yr old mare, hacks out in company spooky but forward. Finishes hack by leading in front by 50yrds without persuasuion.
1st hack alone.good.
2nd hack alone. Stops at the end of a road (rider asks to stop to check road). Then refuses to go down the correct route (right) wants to go left or back up the hill. In middle of fast but not busy road. Backs up as resistance mechanism. Plants. Doesn't rear but throws head up. When kicked HARD for several minutes gives in, goes forward and goes willingly the rest of the way (Spooky)
Next time hacked alone-got round route the other way, stopped by house with cars. Stopped, backing up. Horses in field behind her. Backing into the parked cars (at which point rider turns the way she wants to go for a few strides to get away from cars). Stick no use, kicking no use. Making horse extremely uncomfortable when going backwards/standing and happy praise when forwards no use.
Rider gets off and leads past.

Suggestions please?
 
Don't know about NH but common sense would tell me not to be taking this mare out on the roads, especially a fast road, while she is behaving like this. i think it is dangerous for rider and other road users. Is there nowhere you can take her off road until you have these issues resolved?
With the napping, i wouldn't get into a fight with her. I know it did no good with my mare. I would ride her til she stopped, tried to get her going forwards and every time she went, relieved the pressure and praised her. If she totally stuck, i would get off and lead her for a bit. I would then get back on until she stopped again. I would keep going like this for the whole way out, on the way back in she would go quite happily as she knew we were on our way home. I had to do this for a while until she realised that it was easier just to get on with it.
 
Not a jot of off road hacking sadly. Issue does not arise in the school or on the drive, but 5-10minutes into a hack.
