I'm pretty safetly conscious and will not ride on the road without my hi viz stuff, as drivers see you so much earlier. I actually think it should be law for all pedestrians, cyslists & horse riders.

My friend, (& livery)however is a nightmare and she has a chestnut horse and wears dark clothing, all of which just blends in with the hedges round our way. I think it is because she is to vain to wear the tabards inless I am actually there to make her (....."i forgot" is her answer!)

I do not wish to scrape her horse up off the road in front of my house, so wondering if there were any nocer things to buy to wear, which I would quite like too!

I do remember seeing a stand at RIHS one year with nice skinny type T shirts, fleeces etc but had a quick search on the net, ebay etc and can't find them

Anyone know of any?

Equafleece are pretty good imo.

I have an exercise rug for pony and a gilet for me. The rug is fab, so much better than the slippy type ones. A bit warm for summer, but brill for winter, and is showerproof too.

The gilet is nice and comfy, and I am considering getting a full fleece for winter. They wash really well too, and saves having warm jacket/gilet plus tabard bulkiness.

Thanks, they look nice, but pricey for what I was hoping for I must admit....still would like T shirts as well....the nice sort not man sized!

If you want hi-viz t-shirts any machinery type shop sells those, they aren't very glam but do the job, and saves hassle of a tabard. Machine mart, or maybe B and Q would sell those.

Don't know of any t-shirts esp for riding, sorry.

What about reflective brushing boots, gloves and a simple hat band? They will help her stand out without being full on OTT if she is really that vain.

I decided my horse is worth too much to me to not wear HiViz so I look like a Christmas tree when I go hacking - I have a Motorway standard blouson jacket in orange, a pink hat hand, yellow quater sheet, pink refelctive brushing boots and yellow rein slips.

Boots are made by Legacy or Tesco have cheepy ones, V Bandz for the hatbands, or Mountain Horse for gloves.

Nope she will not own any coloured brushing boots etc etc so I thought maybe a trendy lookin T shirt would do it....plus I would quite like one for myself!! I have seen them but can't find any now!

Christ - and she still rides on the roads?!?!?! She would scare me....having said that we have a running joke on the yard 'who can wear the most hiviz' the poor poor horses just tolerate us. And we are all adults...!

how about v-bandz? they are really good. huge selection. It is wear i got my hat band from them which i have on all the time (in my siggy). then u don't have to remember to put it on. though i wear a reflective bib, hat band, leg wraps and when cold exercise sheet. some would say paranoid, i would say safe

I have a luna rider jacket £29.99 from Ride Away, it's a lovely fit quite flattering actually although pic in catalogue doesn't do it justice, had a lot of comments on how nice it is and how bright! Horse wears Legacy reflective brushing boots which also get a lot of comments! A friend was once stopped by a motorist who commented on how the boots on the horse were great he saw them moving from some distance and thought it was a great idea!! See the Shires reflective jacket on too and it looks (surprisingly) very nice too!

And another vote for LunaRiders stuff, not hugely expensive but nicely cut and more flattering than the usual hi-viz stuff!

Tesco were doing brushing boots with pink/reflective velcro straps a little while ago- is girly pink likely to go down better with her?

I think it's ridiculous that people still put their vanity before their and their horse's safety on the roads. My horse and I go out looking like a Christmas tree, but I'd rather that and the extra reaction/stopping/slowing down time it gives us than end up a statistic.

Good luck getting her to "see the light"!

frankly i don't give a stuff what i look like! if it means that im going to give myself and my horse that extra chance then why the bloody hell not. i have the v-bandz products and think they are fab. in winter months i have a full hi viz warm jacket made by dickies (like builders wear) and in the summer i have a gilet designed for cyclists from JJB..... both FAB IMO.

earlier on this month my novice horse and i were out hacking with my friends daughter on her trusty pony when my horse slpiied on the road and decided to make headway home on his own (thankfully he realised at the corner that we werent coming with him and come back to me!!) leaving me on the floor and my friends daughter hopping off her pony and dealing fantastically with the situation, however all this wasgoing on in the middle of the road and there was a vehicle approaching us head on now by the driver's own admission had we not looked like a christmas tree with our v-bandz and tabards and the horses having their gear on then he would have stopped alot closer to us than he did, now i was in no position to move quickly and my friends daughter wasnt in a position to negotiate her own pony and my 17hh warmblood out of the way in time either. just goes to show... hi viz works - who gives a stuff what it looks like.

I work in a high street clothing shop and abuse my staff discount on reaally, really bright T shirts and vests. Safe and suntannable in!
my horses cant put themselves in hiz viz, its my responsibility.
Buy her a hat band!

I saw some funny hi viz tabards in our local tack shop (god I hate the word..tabard

) anyway back to what I was saying, yes they were GSOH ones, said things like...

Woman suffering from PMT etc etc

There were all sorts of silly sayings on the back...ok so thats not the point but they were all hi viz, had the reflective strips on and of course added a bit of humor to your safety gear!

well, your friend is very selfish, how will she apologise to her horse when he's lying there with broken legs waiting for the vet because she didn't have hi-viz on and a driver didn't slow down enough?
that's what keeps me bothering to put my hideously unattractive hi-viz on every day...

Thanks Guys, she is insistant that she "forgets" though

I always wear my tabard but some of the other stuff looks / sounds nicer, so will have a looky for myself too.

Also had never considered the thought of getting separated from my horsey....so will think about something bright for him too, he wears a yellow exercise sheet as soon as it's cold enough but summer is different, even though you can be ust as invisible in bright sunlight

I wear a hi viz running gilet from JD Sports, I've a long sleeved version as well which is fine for cooler days but it's not a waterproof jacket.

Also, I've wrapped fluorescent tape around a long schooling whip and make sure it's sticking out into the road when I'm riding. Remember those flag things that used to stick out of the side of a bicycle? Same principle. Amazing how wide a berth vehicles give us, it really works.
