Nice warm stable waiting ... but no horse

Very few people put their horses up for sale in December because there are so few buyers at this time of year and of those that haven't sold yet, they are starting to think of spring around the corner.
I think for 3k you can expect a reasonable horse that will be what you list, but as others have said, its pretty much what everyone is looking for so they tend to sell by word of mouth and of those advertised, they sell fast.

I bought the coloured in my pic last summer for what you are looking to spend and he's so fab my 9 year old not only rides him on a regular basis but has nabbed him off me for her next horse, he's only 14.3hh at present but his butt is 15hh so he's still growing - he's only 4!
I set out looking for an older horse, totally dismissed ones under 8 until I met Billy, I'd have missed out on the most fantastic horse if I'd just said no way due to age.
I guess what I am saying is, the general consensus is 10+ when looking for a confidence giver, so the whole world is looking at the same horses, yet there are equally fab younger ones. So maybe broaden your search in more ways than 1? x

Thanks for the advice :)

Possibly because you're looking for what everyone wants but you don't have the budget.

I had a chap that would have fitted the bill perfectly - not a world beater but a nice safe competent confidence giver who would have a go at anything. I sold him for nearly twice what you want to pay - and I could have sold him ten times over.

Good luck in your search.

btw I found my superstar by placing wanted ad. I only got one reply but he was perfect.

Not in the slightest bit true!!

I have so many friends and myself included that have had a horse fitting your description, with perhaps a bit of give and take in the height and age. It's just patience and depends on the time of year.

Place a wanted ad, some people don't advertise their horses due to timewasters, they wait to see an ad that someone has posted that looks like the right person for their horse. It's the best chance you have other than searching all the known websites, nfed, h&h, horsemart etc.
Good luck in your search!

Gorgeous horse JHoward.
From the same website these are interesting.
I like the look of this one, might be a bit too much for a novice though.

Mmmm, OP I feel your pain, know what its like to look for a horse and not find!

Its a blimmin shame, coz my boy would suit you down to the last whisker, but he ain't for sale unfortunately.

The way I acquired him was coz a trekking centre (can PM you with the name of it if you like) on Dartmoor always look for winter homes for their trekking horses and I took him on just for the winter initially, and liked him, so bought him. The advantage of this is you get a nice long trial without having to make a commitment; but obviously its something you need to do in the autumn not this time of year.

The other thing you could do is use an agent; I did this to sell something I'd bought a few years ago which was a bit too sharp for me, and was pleasantly surprised. Again, I can PM you the name of the person I used if you like.

Good luck!

Hadn't thought of that one!! As you said a bit too late now though feel free to PM details as always worth a call

I have added this to my to do list for tommorrow along with stuffing the turkey !! :D

Not sure if it would be what your looking for, but one of my friends bought a horse from the local riding school. RS were looking to loan him out for a few months as he was getting bored of going round in circles and they thought it would give him a bit of a holiday, but my friend ended up falling in love with him and bought him :)
Most RS horses are safe, but if your going to be hacking out alone then make sure horse is okay with this, as lots of RS horses arent used to hacking alone :)

he is a nice looking horse.. BUT Looking at how he jumps, I wouldnt say that he would be suitable as a confidence give, also KD.. as a private sale, if you get said horse home and he is not suitable, by law the dealer does not have to refund/exchange.

bit of info on dealers for you ..

(I used to buy/sell do sales liver so am clued up)

under the sales of the good act.. when a dealer sells a horse they are goverened by this law, this meens if you get the horse home and it is not as described/fit for purpose you can return it and get your money back.

now because a horse has a mind of its own its very hard to on occasion prove the above as the purcheser to the seller.

so.. say you go to a dealer try horse love it its a saint you buy. you get it home and it turns in to fruit cake, you can by law go back to dealer and say OI .. goods not as advertised I want my dosh back.. its at this point dealer can say well you lied about abilties .. bla bla bla..do you see where I am coming from?

when a trader is selling on behalf of a client (private sale) they are not covered by the sales of the good act.

if you buy from a private seller, you have little coe back what so ever.

a good dealer, will offer a decent money back/exchange guarentee, I think EA do 3 months but may be wrong. so another way of looking at is you buy from a dealer.. BUT GET IT IN WRITTING AND SIGNED and you can look at it as a 3 month trial of new horse.

any way sorry ive rambled on.. back to horse.. sorry kd I do not think oliver is the right horse for you.

If you prepared to travel friends of mine are selling a lovely 15.2 coloured mare, she is only 5..maybe 6 (not 100% certain on age sorry lol), but she has hunted & is totally safe to hack, shes a lovely mare & ive ridden her so can vouch for the fact shes safe as houses.

It's definately not a 3 month trial of a new horse, thats a really bad way of looking at it!
You do benefit from the fact if it isn't suitable most will let you swap it for something else, but it can be a lot harder than it may first seem to be 'refunded' as such, as most dealers aren't just hand over the cash on return on a horse that was probably fine when sold - most likely end in court to prove it as not as described!

Personally I think if you are looking for a confidence giver after a break I probably would look at private homes. More likely to find something quiet and 'confidence giving', there are plenty of them with dealers but plenty of newly imported green horses that will soon shatter your confidence :)

I was talking about EA not dealers in general.. I have now checked the website and its 28 days..

from the website..
Guarantee
All horses are vice free (unless otherwise stated) and come with a 28 day exchange guarantee.
Horses sold on behalf of clients do not come under the exchange guarantee.

I bought Dorey after i went to see another horse! Didn't even see an advert for her!

Ditto. Captain was not even for sale! We went to see the local dealer's latest delivery. nothing suited and he said "well there is Captain, but he can be difficult" He had been keeping Cappy for himself to drive, but we met him and fell in love and the rest is history!

My advice - don't just stick to the letter of an advert. Think a horse looks nice but is too big/small/not quite right? Phone up and have a chat!

Completely agree. I wanted a 12yr +, Bay or Black Gelding, 15hh+.

Mum found an advert for a pony in Freeads (no picture) which sounded perfect but she was 18yrs, 14hh, Chestnut Mare. However, she was so perfect, we bought her and 8 years on I know I will never find another like her! :D

I have exactly what you're looking for :) brought to restore my confidence, he's not for sale yet though but will be in the summer.

Absolute bombproof hack in company, hacks nicely on his own once he trusts you, well schooled but not too forward going, enjoys jumping, does exactly what he's asked when ridden no more no less.

Gets over excited where food is concerned and can sometimes pull away when being led or nip when having his girth done up. Other than that he's perfect.

15.1hh, black Sports Horse (we think he's TB x Welsh D), 9 year old gelding.

i know of a nice horse 16.1hh 9/10yr old irish drught cross gelding. Happy Hacker - if thats what you want to do - he would fit the bill perfectly, Can only hack due to spavin - so tight circles are out. but he would hack all day.
in midlands area, and under your budget - if intersted pm me and i will pass the owners details onto you, she wants him to have home where he can be happy just hacking as she wants to do more and he cant do dressage. Lives in or out, easy good do-er. TYhe spavin has fused and causes him no issues.

Ditto what others said about criteria - make being a 'confidence giver' your ONLY criteria. I have a 17hh HW hunter who would be an ideal confidence giver. And a 14hh highland would be equally up to carry an heavy adult. A 'confidence' giver is about how they feel to ride, not their size.

And age has little to do with it - it's temperament. Yes, a young horse needs training but how you feel riding them depends on how they ride and how they react to things. An young horse wouldn't really suit a NOVICE due to the lack of knowledge they have (and therefore will struggle to train a young horse) but a NERVOUS competant rider should be fine: nervous doesn't always equal novice. I have a 3.5yr old just broken (ridden a handful of times) 'confidence giver'. You feel so so safe on him because of the way he moves and his temperment. My competant but very nervous friend would chose to ride him any day over my established full-broken horse ;)

Defo widen your search criteria: I went looking for a school master older horse and ended up with my lifetime horse who was 5 when I got him. Safe, mostly, very forward, cheeky, can be spooky at odd things but that's my fault for not taking him out and about more. He does everything I could ever want but I wouldn't have looked at him twice had my YO not recommended him.

Don't fixate on height too much: a sturdier type may take up the leg and I've known teeny people ride 17hh2s! If a horse is well-mannered, it shouldn't be too much for a novicey type to ride.

Hey Kerry,

Have you looked around the local feed merchants? I know that our feed merchant has a couple advertised and even if you ask in the feed merchant they often know someone that has a safe horse that they are looking to loan in view to buy.

I am currently in Devon and I know a horse that would be perfect, but I think someone else said that a lot of people don't advertise this time of year, however its not as if there not out there you just need to look in the nooks and cranny's.

My suggestion is put an advert in your local feed merchants - ie..... "Lady looking for horse to loan in a view to buy looking for ideally something over ...hh that would be suitable for hacking etc... needs to be a safe ride would be going to a knowledgeable, loving home.... please contact.......

I hope this helps!

Hi Stelzar

Ive been looking on the boards at both my local feed merchants Redpost & Leanard Coombes, didnt think about sticking an add up thats a good idea ill knock one up and pin it up on both the boards.

I agree what with Christmas & winter word of mouth is where i seem to be getting alot of info / leads from.

Nothing advertised in our shop at the moment which would suit, all youngsters!

Both dealers, but have a look at proper horse and properhorsesandponies, I and a friend both bought youngsters from the Cornwall one, and she also bought a NF gelding, who was exactly as described.

Finlake Riding Centre always had horses for sale, worth a call to Jackie.
