Hi,

I have a 10 year old mare, over hte years, her season have more frequent and more intense. last year she had a phantom pregnancy, luckily she came out of it ok. 10 days ago, she cme into season!! she has been in season ever since!! Her behaviour is up and down, day by day or even hour by hour she changes!! i have tried every supplement there is, and nothing even touches!! NAF Magic, NAF Oestress, Moody Mare (cant remember who thats by?!) and thats just a few! Last year, her back became tender, so when i applied pressure with my hand on her loins are, she dipped downwards. She has had her back and saddle checked, they are done yearly anyway, always have been. She is extremely........ horny?! every horse she sees (sex/colour/age/size never a problem) she wants to throw herself at, then most she wants to kill!! Even if she sees a field of cows, she tarts at them, i suppose they have 4 legs, adn are a similiar size to a horse?!?! People she loves, but is a nightmare to handle!! My parents almost refuse to have anythign to do with her. Her stable is now disgusting, i have her on abotu a foot or more deep of straw, to soak up what comes out, and what does come out smells really bad, its think creamy yellow/cream in colour, sorry for the horrible details but i have to tell you so you know what i'm dealing with here!! Last summer , iwas washing her back legs almost daily to wash off the "stuff" that had dribbled down, and gone sticky or hard...... Gross.

Last year the vet suggested looking for cysts/tumours or even infection inside. But once she;d finished her "season" by the time winter was here, she settled, i;ve had abotu 2 months of peace and now, here it is again.

The vet recommended putting a marble inside her, but that worries me, a foreign object in her!?! They also suggested Regumate, but she'd have to be on it every dayy almot all year round and i dont think its designed for that!!! lol!! Then of course there;s sterilising her, but i;m not sure what that involves??

I do have the vet coming out on Thursday this week, but just would like to hear from anyone who might have experienced something similiar??

Thanks in advance!

When marfes start coming into season at the end of winter, they are 'transitional'. Transitional seasons are often far worse than 'normal' seasons.

BUT - it does sound like your mare DOES have a problem. Forget cysts - they don't cause this problem. Two possibilities jump to mind - one is a haemorrhagic follicle - and the other is a granulosa Theca cell tumour (mares don't normally come into season with a GTCT - but they are very variable and they do often result in tenderness across the loins - and violent behaviour.

First step would be to get her ovaries scanned. Seocond step would be to put her on Regumate - that will stop her coming into season. Give it two months and see if she's a nicer mare - if she is, then I would try a marble! They don't work with all mares but when they do - it's a better and cheaper solution than log-term Regumate. (Although it doesn't HURT them to be on Regumate throughout the breeding season - a hell of a lot of competition mares are on it fro 8-10 months of the year with no ill-effects.)

The marble is sterile and put in under asceptic conditions - it's nowhere NEAR as 'foreign' as a foal!!
