I took mine off about a week or so ago now. If the weathers colder in the day and seems to drop before i go down and more than likely to rain then i just pop there little rain mac rugs on but mine are older ponies i probably wouldn't bother if they was younger.
I drive past a poor horses everyday at the mo and his got this what looks like a medium weight rug on the poor thing must be sweating something silly under there as its been rather warm here the last few days.
Henry shall be naked tonight too. Last night I put him a very light sheet on, as it was spitting and spotting a little, this morning I was racked with guilt as he was clammy.
One mustn't forget these are outdoor hardy animals, not domestic pets, so the more mollicodelling they get the more prone to problems they will be. I'm a bit of a natural horseman, so our rugs were off when the frost went on unclipped horses. Clipped a different story - if you follow basic equine growth patterns, they gernerally shed thier winter coat around now - spring (some a little sooner, some later), so if you unrug them around when they would shed, you are doing the same with the rug as they do naturally with their coats. If the forecast is fridge temperature or less you can always pop it back on till the temp picks up. Unclipped horses we don't rug unless the temp is going below 0.
Besides I was once told by a vet that a horse can do things to warm up (move about, roll, etc), but they will strugge to cool down if they are too hot when rugged.
**Horses don't need coats when we do - diffrent body temperature**
I follow the same theory as spookythoroughbred. I tend to err on the side of cold rather than warm under normal circumstances.
Mine is naked at night now in this warm weather, even though I only clipped him again a couple of weeks ago. He's quite a hot body so I have to work to keep him cool rather than warm. I think 90% of the horses on our yard are now naked at night though.
Mine it out for the first time tonight, and he doesn't have a rug on, he loves it! last night I put a v thin cotton sheet on when he was in the stable.
Once his coat is through he stays unrugged if its above 10 degrees, as long as its dry. He's still pretty bald and skinny just now so has had a lw or mw on at night.
