Hi everyone,
just thought I'd share the interesting day we had yesterday, took Mason for his first XC schooling session, where he behaved (almost) impeccably! Vids to follow in another post!
Then cue nightmare on the way home when the temperature gauge started to rise when going up a hill on the motorway, then as I started to pull over onto the hard shoulder, smoke started coming out from under the bonnet, and into the car!
We stopped, and got out of the car, I started to unhitch the trailer while my friend rang for the fire brigade.
The fire brigade arrived and opened the bonnet, there was some liquid under the car, but the smoke had pretty much dissipated by now. The fire brigade said they thought the engine had blown, and it was the oil spilled on the hot engine that had caused all the smoke - big relief! (ish)
However we now had the problem of getting the horses and the trailer home, so my friend rang her dad and he came to get us with another 4x4.
By this point the highways agency had arrived, in case the horses needed to come off the trailer and the motorway needed to be shut, and supervised the switching of the cars on the hard shoulder - all went remarkably smoothly, but I was so aware that it might not have done.
One thing I never thought of was that sometimes when the trailer is unhitched with the weight of the horses in, it can tip backwards, the HA man mentioned this to us, and although we always carry a trailer jack to assist in the event of a flat tyre, there was no obvious way of supporting the back of the trailer to stop it tipping - until we spotted out water container, which fitted perfectly. Just something to be aware of in case this ever happens to anyone else!

I'd like to thank the emergency services for being so reassuring and efficient, and also the Highways agency for being so calm, at what for us was an incredibly stressful time.

Horses arrived home, no worse for wear, I however needed a double brandy!

Glad it all turned out ok for you. We used to have a Rice Beaufort trailer years ago and it had stabilizers at the back that you could put down if you unhitched it, do trailers nowadays not have these?

blimey what a scary day it must have been. bet you are relieved to be home safe and sound though.
good on you for not panicing either.

on the trailer side though i know a few makes/models have the 'legs' at the rear, i guess for incidents such as yours. worth checking trailers to see if they have the legs or not and also learn how to undo them quickly if needed.

glad you are all ok though.

What a horribly frightening experience - glad all was ok in the end.

How nice to hear that all the services were there for you, fire brigade and the highways agency who both really can make a difference to the situation.

Double brandy I think you deserve.

How was your horse during it all?

Glad no one or animal was hurt must have been very scary! We broke down with horses last week and was a horrible experience.

A very well deserved double brandy. :D

I remember those stabalisers, they were great - stopped the dipping of the ramp when the horse stepped on it.

How scarey it must have been for you especially with horses attached. I have a fire extinguisher in my truck but must admit not in my car.

They were both surprisingly well behaved, the only time they got a bit antsy was when we were about to unhitch to swop over, and my friend put their bridles on (just in case) and stood in the trailer between them and their haynets - I think they were more bothered about not being able to get to their hay than anything else!

We have an Ifor 510 trailer, and the highways agency guy got down on the floor to see if the trailer had the stabilisers, and said it didn't. I trusted him as i didn't fancy lying on the floor at the side of the M40! But now we've got home I think I'll have another look to make sure.

we have an IW 510 and definately got the stabilizers as we've used them. like you said now that you are home it would be worth having a proper look.

If your trailer doesn't have stabilisers on the back another option is to carry a couple of bottle jacks with you - quick and easy to use. My friend has them for her trailer after having a similar problem to you and finding out that her stabilisers were almost impossible to shift.
