My friend H is over for the weekend. She used to share Cakey for three years a few years ago so we were both looking forward to a horsey-filled weekend. We went for a nice hack yesterday and set off again today.

We had only gone a short while when a tractor with a silage trailer came up behind us. All the roads around here are single track lanes with hedgerow so we trotted on up the road until we could find a place wide enough for the tractor to pass safely - both horses are very safe in traffic. We popped the horses in a neighbour's driveway (she is horsey and a friend so I knew she would not mind) and the tractor came past.

At that moment the neighbour's peacocks started going nuts, shouting and openning their tails which wound up both horses. I managed to keep Rusky from going into the tractor, but he spun round and took off down the road.

I could hear Cakey behind us so I started shouting to H, "we're making these horses walk NOW H!!" to help with both our courage!! I had just about slowed Rusky to a trot when Cakey overtook us without a rider!!! Well, that was it! I thought H was hurt way back where it all happened and both horses really took off this time, galloping like crazy on the tarmac, with bends and no visibility.

This went on for quite a while, I almost had mine stopped each time, but the loose horse would set him off each time, when we saw another tractor and trailer up ahead. Luckily both horses had the sense to slow down and turned off into the driveway of a bungalow, but both were still very upset. I was just about to jump off and grab both of them when the tractor drove off, effectively clearing the road for the loose horse to go off again!!!!!!!!

I half-bailed out, half-fell off at that stage and both horses took off down the road. I called the OH to come help and maybe stop them at the yard, while hobbling back down the road to find H.

Luckily she met me half way! She had fallen off right at the start but was OK, a few bruises but OK. OH drove up a few minutes later and we all pilled in the car to chase the horses.

We found them a couple of miles down the road where they had set off another rider and her horse, but a horsey pedestrian had managed to stop everyone!!

Luckily no one was seriously hurt, just cuts, bruises and a sprained ankle, the horses seem sound and we rode both of them in the school for a few minutes to finish on a positive note, BUT I can't believe the first tractor driver drove away from an accident he was involved in, leaving H on the ground, the second tractor driver drove off making things considerably worse and the same guy failed to stop when H was trying to flag him down further down the road. What is wrong with these people? Who sees someone having an accident and drives off??

dont think you can blame the first tractor driver as he might not have even seen or heard what went on and was going about his business and he didnt actually cause an accident.

the second tractor driver cld have had a little more common sense to stop the tractor therefore blocking the way and helping you make the road safe and leave you with 2 horses under control and in your grasp than driving on by.

these things happen with horses and the fact that you and your friend and your horses are ok is the most important thing as it cld have been a lot worse

I am not blaming the first tractor driver for causing the accident because he didn't, but it all happened next to him, there was no way he did not see it and he just did not stop.

The second guy was just downright silly not to stop, then he saw me fall off and did not stop and then refused to stop when my friend stood in the middle of the road and tried to flag him down.

Can you imagine driving past someone on a bike, who, for a reason unrelated to you, falls off and is lying there on the road, and you do not stop to see if they are OK??? So, yes I do blame them for not being minimally decent human beings.

stick some epsom salts in their feed as they'll probably be stiff in the morning! Ty did a similar thing a few years ago and the vet recommended them...

Glad you are ok what a horrible thing to happened had it happen to me and my friend a while ago a car knocked into my friend horse and didnt stop tried to drive off with the horse on the bonnet. They were ok and he got taken to court and charged with dangerous driving

That sound's horrible really lucky no one was seriously hurt. Farmers in general don't like horses or their riders but for two to leave you obvously in trouble is really bad. I got pulled over by a horse i was leading last year because a motorbike revved right beside him and the bike rider drove off leaving me on the floor with a rather expensive horse galloping up the road towards a main road

Someone in a car behind stopped and gave me a lift to catch the horse but i do think there are certain groups of people that have no respect for how dangerous horses can be.

Hope your next hack is more peaceful

Sounds like an absolute nightmare, glad you are all OK.

A few years ago I actually did get knocked off my bike by a car on a busy road and NOT ONE driver stopped, nor the driver who hit me. I wasn't too hurt luckily but I was gobsmacked by the way no-one batted an eyelid at a (very bloody) person lying in the road

Have given them some Epson salts, thanks ParkRanger! Hopefully they will be OK tomorrow!

I am astounded at the stories of people being left hurt at the side of the road!!! People are so indifferent sometimes!
