Nissan Navara as a tow vehicle?

Ours was great, 3L diesel engine, don't know about the 2.7 ones. Towed with it for 11 years from new, easily pulled 2 large horses in Ifor 3 horse/5pony box :)
 
We had a fleet of them at my old work. They were top of the range automatics, with the biggest engine. Glad I wasnt paying the fuel, but towed very easily! Really stable and you could forget a trailer was on!
 
I have a Nissan Navara 3 l and tow a Richardson treble with two cobs and a 12h pony with it to go hunting.

It's long with the trailer together but if you are happy to reverse etc rather than trying to turn around on a yard you will be fine.
 
This one is a manual 2.5L turbo diesel. I'd want the option of towing 2 horses with an ifor Williams 511.

I haven't towed before, will need to do my test!

if you are buying an older navara remember to check the chasis as they have corrosion problems & there has been some nasty accidents. If it's been well looked after & wax oiled you will be fine. We normally tow with 4x4s but with pick ups the hilux & izusu are brill
 
2007? Please be very careful, Nissan are buying many of 2006/2008 back due to a
snapped chassis. Checkout the facebook page Nissan Navara snapped chassis group. We've had two and they were great workhorses, but I would be reluctant to tow with an older one after seeing this group.
 
Mmmmm....have seen a chassis snap before my eyes. No harm done but quite dramatic. It was also not very nice as a road car (the only time I drove it) and they do seem to give the lie to the theory that Jap = reliable.

Worth a punt if cheap as chips. And they would do the towing bit no probs.....
 
It's not cheap as chips unfortunately they want market value £5-5.5k. Which has had me looking around at other options - can get a Nissan X Trail, Kia Sorrento or Hyundai Tarracan at similar price.I think I prefer these as they don't have the pick-up style back (although that would be nice for lugging bales of hay!)

I'd also want the car to harrow the manege.

What do you all think of these options instead?

When I had a genuine Nissan Terrano, before Nissan became Renault, I had a look under the bonnet of an X trail, engine was about as big as the Terrano's battery, a friend had bought an Xtrail, it's a Renault Megane in a dress, she spent £££££££ on it, as the Turbo and Diesel pump and some other expensive stuff went on it, just got sorted and someone ran into the back of it and wrote it off, she bought another X trail, had all the same problems pretty much all over again.

I am off Korean as the spare's prices for a Sssangyong I had were horrendous, if your going Korean maybe the Sorrento, other friend had one and it did seemed to do pretty well.
 
As with any vehicle you will always find someone who has had a problem with one & gives the model as a whole a bad review. We have one & it's a fantastic workhorse. The only time we have ever really felt the trailer on the back is when we had my friends very substantial 16.3 cobby type horse in alongside my 16.0 warmblood & even then it had no problems ;)

Also drive it to work everyday & it never lets me down!

DON't do it!!!! Please please please check out the nissan navara snapped chassis FB page first. It affects 2005-2008 chassis but they WILL NOT pay out if you've had it for less than a certain amount of time. I towed with mine for years, LOVED it, but became aware of the issue when my blacksmith's car snapped on him. We took it to be checked - they said it was the best chassis they had seen but basically told us that they would all go eventually - it was a risk we weren't prepared to take whilst towing the horses. Get a toyota instead!!
 
I'll second that from jedjelly - this happened to a friend of mine who used it for towing his rally car. It litterally snapped in half! Having said that my partner has a newer model used for work / agriculture stuff and no problems that we know of.
 
If you are aware of the problems they are easily plated and you can get a bargain ! Just feel above the chasis member from where the buck meets the cab and back for a couple of feet. It is an easy fix as the buck comes off quickly so you can get access.

As for suitability take it from me we replaced 3 discoveries (3&4) with New navaras(12&13 plates) and they not only tow better,are more stable towing, Very nearly as comfortable, A lot cheaper to run. They also dont break down like the discoveries ,each has done over 100k and only needed routine servicing. I have recently had a Nav NP300 which is even better,can get 42mpg and tows 3.5t legally ,done 20k so far and no issues

We have an Xtrail and a Navara. We've had the Xtrail for 6 years and have put 130,000 miles on it without needing anything except unusual wear and tear doing to it. Its towed my ponies around (although I wouldn't tow an IF with it) and we've had the Navarra a year now as we didn't want to risk towing with the X-trail now its older.

Both have been reliable and were very pleased with Nissan cars
