How do you rate them? Are they reliable and comfortable and most importantly how do they cope with towing? My stupid, useless trooper has now blown up in spectacular style, (I have never liked that car....it has a sinsister feel and is always breaking) So I have been looking at replacing it. I have a budget of 3.5k max, the car will be used to tow 2-3 times a month, Ifor 505 with 2 x 480kgs native types, looking at the 2.7 TD or the 3.0 td both of which are rated for 2700kgs, not as much as the trooper but I only transport my own horses so huge towing weight isn't an issue. I have looked at pick ups but I won't get much in that price range, but one car I keep coming back to is the Terrano, I would also not discount another Fourtrack but these are getting harder and harder to come by. Or is there anything else I should look at? I don't like Mitsubitshi shogun/pajero and I also dislike X-trail's as towing capacity too low. Many thanks!

My Terrano is great!

Comfy, heated seats (I have the Terrano II SE+ with the extras!) are brilliant for my back after a long day. Mine is the long wheelbase 7 seater jobbie, but I don't have the last row of seats up. The boot size is OK to take two horses kit out, not the most roomy, but I manage to not overflow into the rest of the seats!

Really nice driving position - much better than the Navara I did my trailer test in.

Downside is that it is quite thirsty, but probably not much different to your Trooper.

Love my SWB Terrano, it has been fab so far- tows two horses easily. It's an older car and will need a bit of money spending on it, as per usual, but parts seem easy to get and not too pricey

Can i ask what engine is in your Trooper and what age it is? Troopers of a certain age had a problem with their engines (pistons i believe) and if it has blown due to that, they are done for free under the recall.

I have the 3.1td Trooper which is bullet proof, but the 3ltr ones are the ones with the problem. I know you are asking about the terrano but if you can get your trooper fixed under the recall (for free) you could always sell it on ... every little helps :)

I've had 3 terranos. I don't think you can get a better value 4x4. They roll around when driving but I guess that is the only downside. They are reliable and tow well.
I'm a bit gutted they don't make them any more!

Loved my terrano. Great car to drive and towed brilliantly. I had the lwb 7 sweater too. Found it quite roomy.

Expensive to run though which was why we fold it when i no longer had a trailer.

LOOVEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE mine.

They will tow gr8 and will pull a trailer out of a muddy field, not so good on corners as per honest john But i find it fine on corners. My mechanic rated them very highly when I was looking, check honest John >>>>http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/carbycar/nissan/terrano-ii-1993/

oh I have the 7 seater 2.7 gr8 for when taking lots people about, it tows brill, the only thing with my large box trailer is its hard to back because I can't see the trailer when reversing. One thing I have just put on is parking sensors which help when parking, you forget about towbar till u hear "CRUNCH"

I haven't towed horse trailer as i have a box, but see loads of Terranos towing trailers and caravans

I love the heated seats, safety locks and CD interchanger

It's the 3.1td, suposedly bullet proof but this one has been nothing but a pain, hence I do not want another!! I plan to take a proper look in the morning, but the way the steam was pouring out from under the bonnet and the fact there was a waterfall coming from under the car I really dread to think what the hell is wrong with it now....I will probably either scrap it or try and sell it as spare/repair to the local off roading club.

Oooooo yes, not good :( ... probably the head gasket, but could well be a knackered water pump, that can have similar disasterous results ... :/ ..... Terranos are a good bit of kit, only thing i find with them is the centre of gravity is quite high (they`re quite high vehicles and on a narrowish wheelbase) so can lollop about a bit, but i doubt you`ll be doing high enough speeds to make it too unstable. :)

must confess when my horse had an accident and I was in hospital seeing my parents in Colchester general I flew back down A12 and hit speeds 95 and my Terrano felt sturdy as a rock

My mum's is amazing! I've towed the pony all over the country with it (automatic 7 seater). So I bought one myself....lasted 4 days then the turbo packed in. The garage repaired it but couldn't guarantee the engine wasn't damaged so I got my money back & then couldn't find another :( I still use my mum's & she never has any trouble with it x

I had the 7 seater Maverick (same as Terrano) it was such a comfy car. Loaded up with dogs and people it always got me out of the mud and got through 18 inches of snow up here on the Downs.
Local dial a ride asked me to ferry old ladies back home as they couldn't get their minibuses out of their car park due to the deep snow and ice.
The Maverick never faltered over the next few hours getting them home, infact the chelsea tractors in front of me were turning round and going back down hills as their drivers had no bottle or clue. The Maverick chugged it's way up all the hills and back down the other sides, no problem.
I'd have one again tomorrow if they still made them, I had a 1998 model

I am leaning towards head gasket too....blasted thing. I'll use the Jag for higher speed driving, but I don't like using it for the horses as it doesn't do it any good being driven down rough tracks and if anyone has had to try and fit bags of feed and bedding in a sports tourer they will feel my pain!!

Yes, i feel your pain, lol ... my daily driver economical car is a peugeot 206 diesel ... that is a laugh a minute loading up feed and shavings into it ... PMSL. I`ll keep my fingers crossed the trooper turns out to be an easy fix for you, even just to sell it on ... Hubby and I are members of a local off roading club, you will definitely get some interest that way as a spares and repairs ;) .... Hope you get a good one for your next work horse (pardon the pun lol)

I hope it's an easy fix too, like you say so I can just get rid of it, hopefully it's just a blown hose or something and not too much damage has occured, TBH if I can just squeeze another few weeks out of it while I look for another car that would be something, at least it should stand me in for around £200 scrap value rather than having to pay to get it scrapped as we used to have to!!

Yes that would be a bonus wouldn`t it. I seem to remember my old gold Trooper doing something similar to yours now i think about it, i`d have to check with hubs, but i`m sure it was the water pump that had seized, causing back pressure which split a hose and knackered the radiator. Thankfully the head gasket seal hadn`t gone, and the block hadn`t warped. Still cost about £180 (this was about 10 years ago) for a new radiator, hose and pump .... but then ran fine afterwards for a good 3 years til it was scrapped due to rusting out (holes bigger than the grand canyon, good old British weather). Here`s hoping this problem you have is the same thing, coz i got steam and waterfall when that happened too :)

I have had two Terannos and couldn't fault them, if they still made them I'd have bought another but I've got a L200 instead now as needed a bigger boot! I got told with my 2005 plate that the engine was the same as those they put in London taxi cabs and were good for a couple 100,000 miles if looked after.

I am on my second Terrano and love them.

They have both towed brilliantly (LWB 2.7 diesel) and I find them very comfortable.

The only downside is that they are quite heavy on fuel on short runs but cruise very happily down the motorways on long trips.

I`ve got a 2005 SWB 3.0 litre commercial and I love it! Carries up to 750kg on board as well as having a decent tow capacity.
My husband on the other hand hates it as he keeps losing the back end on corners/roundabouts. I keep telling him that you can`t fling them around, they have to be driven with sensitivity!

I love my terrano! It's also for sale ;) only because it's not very economical! 2003 Nissan terrano sport 2.7 diesel, tow bar, 90,000 miles, 7 seats just been serviced and 11 months MOT

I have 2004 3L TD SE, rates for 3000kg, never had a problem towing, regularly tows Ifor 610 slant load with either 2 horses or 1 horse with 4 wheel carriage, or 3 large round bales lol!! been doing this since new so 10 years now.

Girl on our yard has one and loves it (SWB version) although she has found that carpet in boot and passenger footwell have been wet last few days. She looked on google and it is (the only ) known issue she could find with them.

Have any other Terrano owners had this problem?

Mine has this issue, I thought it was due to water getting in at the bottom of the windscreen, taped it up with duct tape and it helped for a while but now does it again. I cut the carpet out of the passenger floor well to get rid of the bad smell from the damp carpet, still leaks though but at least the smells gone.

Watch the gear boxes they often blow and very expensive!
Have known two different cars gear boxes went twice!
Every time they towed of road.
Personally would not touch!

I'm in the north east (TS14) and asking £3500 ONO we've never had any major issues and it's only had 2 owners - my dad bought it brand new then I bought it off him so I know it's been well looked after

Will PM you - but have been given this link with a fix for you.
