I have decided to sell my car - which I feel very sad about as it is fun and sporty, but just too expensive to run

I have been thinking about a Nissan X-Trail and was wondering if anyone had one. On paper they look pretty good, good mpg, good size and able to tow a trailer - which you can't do in a TT! I would def get the diesel as the reports I have read suggest this is the best option.

So, anyone any thoughts?

Thanks!

My sister has an Nissan x-trail and pulls her trailer every where with it, she rates this 4x4 as a good pulling car.. (for the horse trailer, that is..LOL

When not towing the Xtrail is the best off and on road balanced 4x4 iw pretty good at both. I loved mine but had to give it up as it was company car and I left! Now have LWB Landy!

The problem is that my car is now really expensive, it is in a high insurance & tax bracket, a full tank is over £80 and lasts for about 4 days if I am lucky & drive sensibly and it is a pretty useless horsey car as I can't fit much in it - if I need to take my saddle home, everything has to be moved over to one side and I need to fold the back seat down and position it really carefully so the roof doesn't sit on it.

However it is so much fun to drive and having 2 nano seats in the back means that I can never take more than 1 person anywhere so I don't cart people around all the time! Oh this is so unfair! I want both!

I've got an x-trail, and I love it!
Great fuel economy (diesel) even when towing. Manages one horse in an ifor comfortably and legally.
Plenty room inside for all your bits and pieces, but most of all a great tow vehicle.
Recommended.

I wouldn't recomend the Xtrail for pulling anything more than a trailer and 1 horse under 500kg. We had one, it struggled up hills and feels very lightweight - I'm afraid I swopped mine for a Terrano - much better.

Just what I was going to say. It may look good on paper, but in reality it is fairly gutless and lightweight. We had one and regretted it almost immediately - an expensive mistake, but it had to go. I would put it in the same category as a Rav4, it isn't even as sturdy as a Freelander. Having recently seen a caravan overturn a BMW estate, I am highly aware of the importance of sufficient weight in the tow car.

2.5 petrol, 175bhp. Automatic. Truly dismal car! The diesel may be better. We are now on our second Discovery, and apart from the embarrassment of being seen in public these days in anything other than a Smart car, it is wonderful!

we had a x-trail and it towed the caravan lovely but i wouldnt have attempted to tow the trailer with anything in it as its not legal the x-trail is very lightweight as someone earlier mentioned but is a very good motor ours was the 2.2lt diesel was very good on fuel and very roomy and also comfey was really sad about it going but was company car if we had to buy a car i would get 1 with no hesitation

so much more mpg than a maverick/terrano, had a maverick and updated to a x trail love it, pulls my 15.3 in the 505 atreat, but do have landy if need to pull two horses, but as friend horse will only travel in lorry, don't have to worry about that.

From what I've heard they aren't great for towing... Because they are fairly light, you can't get much in a trailer at 85% of the X-Trail's kerbweight. Strictly one horse maximum and little kit. In the end I decided against it and got a Kia Sorento, which IMO was by far the better car. It is however more costly to run (higher insurance bracket and tax etc).

As RonaldoToo said the Kia Sorrento is a great option - my family use it to tow their caravan and Uncle borrows it to hook up to their trailer for shows. Though the best 4x4 we had for all round comfort/towing ow our Ifor trailer/dogs in the back etc was the Jeep Grand Cherokee. Though now horses and trailer are gone parents have swapped it for far less guzzly 4x4

Hi, I've got the arctix expedition (sp) 2L diesel but it's 173 horse power, it takes about £75 to fill up completely and it only does about 400 miles for that. Saying that it is a great car but you pay for it being a 4x4, I think the tax was £205 this year. I was advised by dealer that if I wanted to tow it would be ok for one horse, but realistically it was better to go for the pathfinder if I was wanting to tow. Luckily I have a lorry so haven't had this problem. Good luck!

We've got a 2.3 diesel sport, and it does about 45mpg, and can get up a steep hill with 2 LW 15hh horses in a trailer (just made the weight!!). We've had it for years and absolutely love it.

I think it was the 2.2 diesel model, Columbia ltd ed one. It was lovely to drive, great inside etc, I couldn't fault it that way - just was too lightwieght for towing horse and trailer. We were bordering on the 85% kerbweight limit and I almost felt as if the trailer was more in control of the car.
