i've got 4 bays, so bot eggs show up really easily, and i usually spend a lot of time pinching them off the horses' legs. not a single one (yet?!) this year. surely they should have been and gone by now? anyone? thanks!
Really?
Now thats funny because I have the exact opposite.
Haven't seen a single bot egg for years. This year I am out with the knife on a daily basis!!!
Never seen so many, they must converge at night and have egg laying competitions just to keep me busy!
I think it must be the area you live in as this year i havent had any either and im near Kerilli, or something to do with the weather we've had this year, as last year we had quite a few
Blimey there have been loads this year up this way....where i work i would say most of the ponies have come in covered takes me ages to clear them all....bot knife is now blunt lol!
what area are you in? maybe we could find out the worst and best areas for the little blighters and why! Did you have a wetter or dryer summer than last year?
That is because they are all in Ontario, mainly on my horses!
Oddly enough I was going to post asking what people use to get them off with, these are very persistant eggs. Knife didn't work too well, neither did the trusty pumice stone, if I can find one it will be the razor today. Well, it won't because we are having quite an impressive storm and the horses will be drenched.
We are shaving them off FB with a cheapo razor on a daily basis at the moment and when we go to bring them in you can see the wretched flies hovering around their legs and popping eggs out like machine gun bullets

Mine's the same! Have never had any on Twiglet before now, and this year he has been covered
i'm in South Lincs (over near The Wash, East coast of England), had a v dry summer. i don't remember that stopping the little blighters in the past though.
Enfys, i pinch them off with my fingers, carefully. my horses are all used to it now, but to begin with they're a bit suspicious about it!
We have had the worst year ever for bot eggs - my lot are constantly covered, and not just front legs like normal, but neck, shoulders and even right through their manes!
Ours are all covered here, well mine isn't as they don't seem to bother about him (apart from the odd couple on his black bits!) but one of the bays is coming in absolutely covered in them, all over his legs, shoulders and through his mane.
Whereas last year we didn't have any
Must be a localised thing.
I've got three : a dark bay who is covered in them daily despite me completely clearing them every evening (and it's really getting a bit tedious now), a bay/grey who gets a few and grey that literally only has the odd one or two.
I discussed the very same thing with YO on sunday - no bots - we are in WV5 West Midlands - although my friends yard near codsall which is not far away their horses have had bot eggs
This is the 3rd year that I have had no bot eggs on my horses, i put it down to the fact that I feed garlic granules now instead of powder and the horses don't seem to be bothered by flies like they used to be and my field is surrounded by ditches and has a pond in the corner. Also I have not seen a single horsefly this summer either.
Not had a single bot egg on any of my 7, bays and greys mostly, and not had a problem for years. A friend over the road has had some though so it must be location. Maybe bot flies don't travel far?!
