My lad is very strong at the moment when out riding with other horses and I'm struggling to hold him. When we're hacking out alone, schooling etc he's fine in his loose ring kk ultra, but he tends to get very excited in company! We used to use a dutch gag, but since using the kk ultra he's never seemed to be happy in it and throws his head around a lot. For the past few hacks out in company I tried a waterford baucher, thinking it would stop him leaning, but to be honest I felt he leaned less in his kk ultra and our brakes weren't much better either!

The other bit I wanted to try was the neue schule universal, but as they're so expensive I'd like to try one first rather than make an expensive mistake. Do you know where's best to try to hire one? And just a thick question...I know they're best used with a curb, but which ring does it go on?

are really good- I think it is about £5 to hire for £30 days and they then take it off the purchase price.

I have hired a couple of bits from there in the past and they are very quick and helpful

Curb goes on the top ring I think

Hope that helps

hello
i had the same problem with my ex-racer. she is 16.2 and can be very strong and scatty. she was fine out hacking on her own but in company it was a nightmare. she was ridden in a loose ring french link which obviously wasnt enough. i tried a waterford snaffle but she made her opinion clear she didnt like it. eventually i was recomended to try a myler low port comfort snaffle. she loved it. and i can use a curb chain with it whe out hacking! with a bit of schooling and trying to go out more often in company with no fast work, shes now lovely and relaxed and we still use the comfort snaffle.

Have you had teeth checked in the last 6 months. you'd be surprised how sharp they get and it can make all the difference. Once thats ruled out, try transitions up and down when schooling and as ThaeanAlice says no fast work. The harder you pull the harder they will pull. Getting harsher bits isnt always the asnswer..... hope that helps

Thanks everyone, thanks for the link, i'll give them a go. His teeth were last done about 6 months ago, so I'll get the chappie out to check them again just to make sure.
