No fill Rain Sheets

Do you use no fill rain sheets or do you always use one with a little bit of filling?
I don't use no fill ones as they always seem to feel damp under them even when they're not so mine has his 100g rambo on when its warm but raining
 
I've had an amigo, an old masta and a shires highlander sheet leak, but my jhl sheet does seem to hold up better, whether it's because it has net lining therefore breathes better than some i'm not sure, but have to say the best of the lot is my 40g fal, which does hold water off completely but then does get a little too warm on those warmer sun showers. my friends seem to have no problems with their weatherbeeta landa sheets either.

Used to have a second hand Zing- Dont know what the old owners did to it - but a seive would work better!!!

New Derby house one - 20quid in the sale - Works a treat!!!!
 
I've got two in Derby House ones that are fine, however compared to the similar priced Shires one that my third horse has on, they are poor quality, and I will be buying the Shires one next time. That said, the DH ones have done two summers so far... I wouldn't like to put any fill on ours - they are fat and warm good doers, and only had 200g rugs on when it was -15 in January!
 
My TB often has a no-fill rug on if it's windy/raining during spring + autumn. Don't use them so much on the ponies but definitely a handy thing to have. I would rather they were a little on the cool side than too warm - I don't have to worry about them getting too hot in a no-fill rug. :)

ETA: my chap has a WB Landa, is about 5 years old now and never had a problem with it. It sometimes gets put on when he's damp but he's always completely dry within 30-40 mins.

I don't like no fill sheets - I use them with a cooler underneath, as I think they can get very cold under them :)

However I do add the no fill sheet over the top of my stable rug = turnout rug ;)

Why do you think they get cold under them? I use them a lot at the moment on both my horses so now you are worrying me!
 
well, it would be like us wearing a very thin waterproof sheet, would keep us dry but not warm, imo the point of no-fill is use in warm (ish) rain, but we get very little warm rain (especially in the waterlogged greens of ireland :p) - if it was warm rain I'm happy with them out naked!

One of the horse's on the yard has a no-fill for turnout, and last week it was tipping it down here (our arena was unusable!) and every day came in cold but dry! The fact it has been very windy as well doesn't help.

I think part of the problem is when it really starts to pour our horses stand under trees/in the shelter so not actually eating so not gaining any warmth, so i prefer to stick a cooler or use a 100g/50g rug or nothing at all :)

If your horses are not coming in cold then I wouldn't worry! :)
 
I see your point but the temperature would be the same rain or no rain, if the horse is naked in that temperature then just to provide a waterproof layer shouldn't make them colder than they would naked without the rain, just eliminates the combination of rain AND cold by keeping the rain off!?! My only thing with sheets is condensation build up underneath and most are not waterproof, only certain ones seem to be up to the job.
 
I use no fills - I have a Weatherbeta one and a cheapo Saxon one but I do find they often feel damp underneath/have condensation - for this reason I've just bought a new shires one which has a cotton lining which I hope will be a bit better.

With the rain we've had today though I don't think any rug would cope - my girl was dry underneath the weatherbeta but still shivering like mad.
 
Yes, but there is no real warmth generated by the no fill rugs, as it also prevents the coat from doing it's job of generating heat, as imo sometimes you can be warmer when wet :)

I have an amigo sheet, which i think is the 600d one, and have had it for years, and is very very good :)
 
I have a knight rider light weight rug and i don't like it, it was given to me brand new so i can't really moan, but it's 1 size too short so doesn't cover his bum and for some reason it gapes around the neck so he gets soaking wet underneath the rug :(

does anyone have any recommendation for cheap rugs that fit big fat cobbys well?

also, i only have the one rug, i'm going up to let him back out into the feild in a bit, but what do you guys do if the rug is still wet? i don't want to turn him out in nothing but putting a wet rug on would be like putting a wet anorak on! cold and wet :(

I only use no fill for summer, eg now when its raining constantly or the weather drops below 8oC.

I know it doesnt keep her that warm, but it will be better than nothing & keeps her dry. You know yourself, if you get wet you get cold.

My next rug up is a 70g one which i'll put on in winter.
 
Would have recommend my 600 denier Amigo until today, been raining heavy since 4am til now, I went to see him at 12pm & it had soaked straight through he was shivering! Always been fine til today but this was heavy rain. Gone back out in his 220g full neck trusty weatherbeeta I know wont leak!

isn't knightrider made by rhinegold?? wouldn't touch any of their rugs!!! sheet wise recommendations seem to be the weatherbeeta landa, amigo 1200, and jhl (probably includes mark todd as same company) possibly some others too that i haven't experienced.
 
My 2 have had their 600d Amigo rainsheets on in all this rain, about 6 1/2 hours today, and come dry as a bone underneath. Good old Nikwax!!

Is it?? I've been trying to find out but with not much luck! No I really don't like it, it doesn't fit at all well!
