Im at a yard that has no grass at all in the fields. Im getting really fed up with this. Im trying to find somewhere new but cant seem to find anything or some land to rent.

i was at a yard with no grass, hd fields but no quality grass in them - my mare is a good doer and i had to feed her throughout summer just to keep her in condition! keep looking, i was lucky enough to stumble upon my friends yard and theres plenty of grass! dont give up!

Me too nothing coming through.Restricted turnout at the moment as fields are being fertilised then another 2 weeks restricted for weed kill.Worse than winter .

grass is my pony's worst nightmare, I always have the opposite prob, too much grass and he needs to live on nothing, being laminitic prone.

Don't shoot me but we could actually do with a nice drop of rain to bring the grass on. Here in East Anglia we haven't had any proper rain for about a month and we too are struggling with the lack of some good old Doctor Green at the moment.

Agreed Im in norfolk and everything is bone dry.Little downpour at night would be agreeable

we have very restricted turnout all winter but nothing seems to have been done with summer fields yet- they still look trashed from last year

- am sure should be being fertilised or rolled or something by now?

just seems to have sheep on them at all times eating all the grass

Couldn't agree more! We need a really good soaking to get the grass growing - an odd thing to say considering I have my mare on a starvation paddock because of lami. Am still having to hay mine at night as there is no grass coming through - where my mares paddock has been restricted the bit she is not on has been rested for a fortnight now and there is no difference between the grass at all! My boy is so hungry he tries to eat the grass as he comes in to the yard and even tries to snack when out!!

Funny you should post this. I was at PC today and heard someone say "when the grass comes through" and thought that was mighty strange. My grass has "been through" for weeks now and is growing at a steady rate. The two little ponies are muzzled and Oliver and P have put a bit of weight on. They're out 24/7 too.

I can't quite understand the concept of no grass, given the temperatures we've been enjoying, but clearly it's a problem repeated elsewhere.

Perhaps we're just privileged by the fact that we have good quality dairy grazing anyway, so it's not a bad quality grass in terms of willingness to grow? (Does that even make sense?)

I think it depends how bald the fields were going into the winter. Fields that have been grazed right down to nothing and can't be spared for resting will take a l-o-n-g time to recover.

What is grass?

We don't see it from about November onwards, this year we had no snow through March but the temperature hasn't been warm enough to kick start the grass so everything has been brown, it is just starting to come through now, except it's under snow again at the moment.

I expect to feed hay, or supplement with hay, for at least 9 months of the year until the last cut of hay is in. My land is of more use to me, and more productive, growing hay than grazing horses on.

I used to moan about the grass coming through late but I didn't know how lucky I was in the UK when there IS grass of sorts most of the year.

We went from too cold to too dry in about 3 days. Our ground has been like concrete for the last couple of weeks & like some else mentioned, where the field has been divided you can't see the difference. But at least we had rain last night (seems strange to be saying "Thank god" rain at the beginning of April!) so we should see some growth now.

We are Cambridge, and no grass here either. In fact my horses clips are very slow to grow out as well this year. Very late spring here.

Our fields were very wet for a very long time following the snow. I suspect this is why our grass is slow coming through. It's a bit frustrating as all of the other horses on the yard are good doers, living on what grass there is and looking very well.
I'm still feeding twice a day and hay at night! sigh - not long now, fingers crossed.

Our horses recently moved off their winter grazing and on to a transition field. It's lovely to see them back out on a bit of green. It will be a while yet I imagine before they are turned out on their spring/summer grazing. But the rested fields are looking wonderful.

Im envious of those of you with grazing. It has been overgrazed by the looks of things. Think Im going to have to look at new yards. Im having to feed twice a day (shes really skinny) and give extra adlib hay. Great
