No hacking at new yard. What do I do?

It depends on what sort of hacking you want... our hacking is crap, it takes around 1hr15 to get to a bridleway and we only have maybe 3 or 4 in the area. However, all of the roads are quiet and there are lots of routes we can take, making shorter routes into longer ones as they all join up and are all circular.

So, although the hacking is crap because there's very little off road, you get used to it and hacking on the road isn't too bad. I would hack more if I could get off road regularly but make do because the yard itself is fantastic, great facilities and amazing YO :)

At our yard we have very few hacking routes- more because there are some private fields we have permission to ride round if we're careful. Hacking isn't that important other than as something else to do to keep your horse from being bored/ becoming stale. Reggie never complains when we've gone on the same hack 3 times in a row because the ground is too wet everywhere else- quite happily mooches along with his ears pricked!

Hiya, as you know we only have hacking on the farm which is nice for a canter. We have lanes round us but have to have to go along the busy road to get to them. I just go hacking in the truck which is nicer as you can go wherever. You have a truck, just put Dyl in it and go! I go and ride with 2 friends on 2 seperate yards most weekends and just box to them so you could always do that. You could come and hack with me and loooooooooopy!!!

I'd look round and move as soon as I found a good yard with good hacking. I love hacking and with the price of diesel and farm rides what they are, if you can't enjoy lots of varied hacking from where you are based getting out regularly will be expensive.

If you were just focused on schooling and competitions, then yes, stay and put up with crummy hacking, but if hacking is a big part of what you and your horse enjoy and you want it for fitness, you should move IMO. Wanting to do what you want to do with your horse isn't being spoilt, its what you have it for and its entirely your call. :)

personally i wouldn't find it a problem. you've got the farm to ride round and xc course so plenty of areas to have a good canter. you have an indoor and outdoor school, great for extra schooling etc. you have a box so you can jet off elsewhere if you want some different scenery. if i was you i wouldn't be complaining! i'm not allowed to complain cos i have my own land and stables etc but i have no box to get to competitions and have to ride10/15 mins on a busy road to get to some alright hacking, to go to better hacking it takes me an hour to hack there on VERY busy fast roads that idiots use with their bikes etc.
can swap if you like? ;)

i also like you advice about coming up to a busy road in leg yield. i've never heard of that before but i think i'm going to try it seen as though my big horrible horse Meg was been a rearing b**ch today again at the junction to the main road my yard is situated on and won't stand still and rears up!
don't complain take the place on that yard!!! :p

Where abouts in gloucestershire are you? I think there is supposed to be some lovely hacking around there - but I guess depends where you are! (Your yard sounds like mine - mine is in Gloucestershire so I am wondering if we're on the same yard!)
