My three were all trimmed on December 10th. All are barefoot, have Dengie hifi unmollassed and speedibeet and adlib hay and until this weekend were living out. At the time the new one (who arrived Dec 5th) had his front shoes off and farrier said all had healthy feet with the exception of the shetland who's got box feet/long toes and usually has toes taken back because she had lammy last yr.

None of them ever do roadwork and I haven't even ridden since new yr, but looking closely at their feet none of them seem to have any hoof growth. Shetland's toes are still squared off, and Alfie's missing a piece of one frog (he's had thrush which I've treated with Purple Spray and Milton), but it's been 12 weeks. Normally Alfie's feet grow like wildfire and the shetland has hers done every other visit, but I can't fathom why their feet are so slow to grow at the minute. Is this okay? I've had horses my whole life but they've never gone 12 weeks without a trim before.

My TB had shoes off for a winter break in October ... hasnt been touched since and and hardly any growth! i hold the appaling winter grazing responsible - theres only so much hard feeds can do. peraonally i wouldnt worry x

My WB and old mare had their shoes off in oct last year and haven't needed a trim....the WB is retired and old mare is lightly hacked round fields and lightly schooled this winter and farrier just checks them and goes nope they are doing the job nicely:D

I wouldn't worry too much.

I wouldn't worry too much. I have 3 shod, and one barefoot. He has never been shod, and is the first one I've ever had bare foot. Dolly is shod every 6 weeks, 2 boys every 8 weeks. Ollie is booked in each time, and farrier will have a good look at him each time he comes, and trim if necessary. He hasn't had a good trim for about 10 weeks, but will be trimmed Saturday.

If you did more roadwork they might grow more (but would also wear as well ;) ). In the winter the growth does slow, but it is not something that would worry me at all.

Okay thats good news, thanks all. My appy is a loon on the road and my new boy stresses when not in company so i just ride in the fields/bridleways weather permitting (hence not ridden in months!)

I thought my pony had not had any hoof growth, but the damaged area on his hoof is growing out, so wear has been equal to growth

I you have had the frozen fields that I have, it is amazing how much hoof it wears off. None of mine need trimming but they are still growing plenty of foot.

We had a lot of frosts in Dec if I remember rightly, but they've been on squishy clay for over a month now and even when it's cold it doesn't really freeze as such (although I've stabled them since Sunday and it's rock solid atm!)
