Bugger luggs is determined to get me into trouble with the YO me thinks.

Several times now I've come to the yard on a morning (not every morning though) and his stable light as been on.

Now at first I thought I must of left it on  despite being sure I hadn't, as I run through my usual checks on a night before I leave...both stable lights off, tack room locked, taps off, no tools left in stable, headcollers off and yard gate shut yada yada...as you do.

I've now discovered (after suffering a week of 'Lights Out All Out' OCD!!! ) that in fact Mr Mackenzie was indeed switching his own light on :D, perhaps I should of realised this seen as I had to confiscate my headcollar hook/rail to Miraed's stable top door because he kept sliding it along and then helping himself to what ever was on it and chucking my headcollars on the floor outside his stable door after he'd chewed on them for several hours.

He can reach the light switch, not sure how to stop him doing it though, not that it really matters to me but I'll have to let the YO know that it's not me that's leaving it on the night before as he once put a sign up years ago (in the other block) saying if anyone left the lights on on a regular basis he'd switch the electric off and once he did (to teach everyone to remember not leave lights on even though it was someone else that kept doing it ).

Any useful suggestions? as you can see from below, where the switch is, it's a soft touch pad type of switch so it's really easy for him to press it with his nose.

This morning...

PMSL!!!!
Clever Mackenzie! Perhaps he cannot sleep with the light on?
Easy solution is go to b and q and get an external lightbox cover. It will need screwing to the wall (watching the wires obviously!) but will stop him switching his light on "after hours" as it clips down :D

Bless him, he might be scared of the dark. You could put up a ring on the wall between his door and the switch and hang a small 'Jolly Ball' on it to amuse him and stop him playing with the lights.

That's a good thought, didn't know they existed, I'll have a look on line, thank you.

Another good idea, thanks.

I think I'll have to treat him to some stable toys, I was thinking about a stable mirror the other week (not because of this, just thought it would be nice to get him one) but I had to ban him from his snack ball as he used to kick it around his stable too much and mash his bed up.

He has tyre to keep his bucket feed bucket in place (he plays footie with that also) but then he chucks his tyre around as well!

Maybe one of those likit balls that scew onto his wall, although it wouldn't last 2 minutes

we have those electric light covers on all ours, as we had one who used to do it so to be easier we covered them all...cant do it now. maybe get him a treat ball or something...only prob with jolly balls with the one at our yard was he picked it up and threw it into yard every nihgt so didnt really work to keep him entertained!!

How about a biggish football, or medicine ball? Some logs on the floor? A bunch of twigs hanging up (all non-poisonous of course! :D)? Plastic bottles tied to the rafters, with different contents, e.g. water, stones?

Now I've got vissions of a 'Mr Mackenzie's One Man Band' playing through till the early hours :D

My mare's neighbour kept doing this to Red's light !! I would get to the yard in the morning and she'd give me a withering look, he'd be in darkness with a cheeky look. I have no idea when he would turn her light on but I just put some sticky tape over the switch, no expense, low tech !!

hmmm good idea although I think he'd it eat.:D

He he naughty mr Mackenzie! I have one like this, I tie her up at the end of the alley whilst sorting my other mare out for bed time, she's learnt to turn the lights on and off with the pull cord, she thinks it's hilarious to plunge everybody into darkness then as I walk towards her to turn them back on she does it!!!!

I tucked the cord up so she couldn't get to it and she has resorted to nudging the touch light on and off instead much less disruptive for everyone!!!

It looks like the switch is screwed to a board so it might be easiest to put a piece of timber on the stable side of the switch to block his access.
About 8" of 3x2 should suffice.

Tee hee hee, what are they like.:D

I had exactly the same problem with my horse, in fact, I had a neighbour ring me one night to tell me that the lights in the yard were on, he thought we had an intruder! My solution was to hang his top door on the other side so the light switch was behind it, might be an option?

That's what we have, very simple and straightforward! Its the green bit on the right :)

Doesn't stop them turning them on and off when they're tied up though, especially when you're picking feet out you often find yourself plunged into darkness cause someone has an itchy ear :)

when Ruby was at home she learnt to switch on her stable light on. if there was activity in the farm yard\sheds - lambing or calving late at night, Ruby would turn her light on just for attention. She would turn the light on during the night, it would still be on when I look out of window in morning but by the time I'd be out th light would be switched off. When she was moved to another stable with switch outside she soon learn't to turn that on and off. In the end we gave up turning the light off seeing as she wanted it on!!

we had a horse that used to do that, so the YO just put a block of thin wood up next to it slightly longer than the box so he couldn't get his nose on it. at least he is intelligent enough to do it :D

Bless! :D

We went down the other morning to discover one of the 24/7 ers had broken onto the yard, and switched the lights on - cheeky beggar! :D
