Ok, why is it you hear of so many unwanted, abandoned horses / ponies... Most getting sent off to the meat man! Yet I'm looking for one, I'll take anything practically, any problems, issues aren't a problem. Any breed although would prefere a native / native type but that's not necessary and any height/age, oh andust be free or cheap.......it'll have a 5* understanding / loving home!!.....can I find one??? No!!!! Argh

I've checked project horses, horse mart, horse quest, preloved, freeads and h&h! "/ all u want is a cheap project tht needs a bit of love and tlc

you will find, like me, that just when you are thinking of giving up looking, and considering moose riding or alpaca wool collecting that the horse of your dreams will turn up! Dont give up - what are you looking for i love horse hunting?!x

Thanks everyone, looking for 13hh upwards 3years plus, any breed/type don't mind 'problem' horse / project or horse with 'issues' as I will work with it! Must be free or cheap

Sorry not going to be popular here.....but why shoud you take advanatge of a free or cheap horse, just because of the economic climate? How do I know that you (who wants a free or cheap horse......) has the wherewithall to look after my horse / pony ( and I have 3 looking for new homes) Because you are looking to pay £0......how does that fill me with confidence that you are able to cope with (say) a 16.3 TB who has been used to the best of everything in his racing career, or the 2 ponies who ended up with us 6 weeks ago, looking RSPCA cases (worming - that costs......feed, that costs too, land - oh my goodness that is at a premium too) but after the items in brackets we offered - guess what they look fab now - am I going to give them to someone who wants a free horse - I don't think so!

Perhaps because some people would rather spend god knows how much careing for a horse that has a unknown future if it doesn't find a new home!! Some of us have sparse land available that can accomedate a horse that needs it!!! After all I'd rather have a cheap horse that means I can spend time and money on helping than spend thousands on a horse that already has a good home! And while we are at it, believe it or not money doesn't make people better at owning/caring or riding horses!!!!!! I've had many 'problem' horses and youngsters that I've been given to me cheap as if I didn't take them try would have ended up at the knackers yard...oh and guess what....they've all gone on to either stay with me and lead usefull lives or go to someone who enjoys them for what they are and what they are capable off!

Its not the cost of buying a horse its the cost of keeping it and caring for it. Just because you dont have £3000 up front does not mean you cant afford to look after it or dont have the skills or knowledge.

Good luck with your search, there are people with young or problem horses that I am sure are looking for someone to take on their problems and give an animal a kind loving home or maybe you could just ask if anyone wants some help?

I wouldnt give my horse to someone who couldnt afford to buy one.
If they cant afford the initial outlay for a horse, how do they afford to look after one when the costs run into thousands?
I would worry about whether the person could find the money for say, a vet bill at short notice etc

When I sold my horse (wasnt in it for the money) I wanted him to have a kind loving home, which he still does have 4 years on, so I said, home more important than price as thats exactly to me what it is all about. Me having to sell him through no fault of his own. I was happy that these people didnt have a lot of money up front but I knew they had enough to pay for him week in week out. I dont know about you guys but selling your horse is seriously heartbreaking and thats why as soon as these people walked into the yard I knew they were right for him. Its your duty to find a good home for your horse, so you have to consider the price of that.

Why don't you take one on loan?

Unless you are looking to make money this would seem the perfect option for someone with no capital outlay available but money & resources to look after one.

Put a wanted advert out. I recently did as wanted an unbroken nice project pony, I didn't want a free manky one, but rather a nice show type (which I found within 24 hrs of placing the advert) but was inundated with offers, some of which were "free to good home". I now am the proud owner of a reg conne x show hunter pony who is a perfect little chap.

Thanks, unfortunatly due to some awful experiences I don't loan horses or loan out horses! I'm sure something will come up, it always does in the end and there's no real rush!

just go to your nearest market and buy one, perhaps?

I would second this, a friend of mine goes to the makets and picks up nice young "projects" very cheaply. She brings them on, feeds them up and then sells them on. Recently a 14.2 3 year old unbroken cob £250. Looks poor at the mo but with her tlc they soon come right.

Llanybdyr (sp?) is a good place to look but you may need to harden your heart a little as there are always some sad cases for sale.

Although i think its a bit cheecky trying to get a free horse, i am going to have to agree with the OP... we could NEVER in a million years afford to buy a horse for much over £1k - if that, yet we can just scrape by looking after the one we have; and guess what? He is the happiest healthiest horse ever. Every so often we will have enough money to compete, but he is always kept in full work, and looks like a proper competition horse - its not all about the money you have, if it was, we wouldnt have horses. In theory, we shouldnt have horses, becasue it means we dont have much of a life due to little money, but its what i love, and my horse is happy.. :)

I agree that I wouldn't be able to get hold of 2 grand to buy a new horse! But I can more than afford to keep my 2 boys in luxury lifestyles! They are fed the best quality everything, have the best quality tack and rugs etc... But I could never affford to pay out the 5 grand now that I paid for my boy then, the only reason I could afford to buy him is because I was very lucky when I sold my mare, I made such a good profit on her that I had the spare cash to buy him!
And my old boy was only a grand and my mom bought him for me as we felt sorry for him, still have him 6 yrs later and love him to death, and he has turned out to be worth (to me) 10 x the price we paid for him :D

I see what you are saying Dressedkez but if I was unfortunate enough to have to have to get rid of my horse because I couldn't afford him anymore and he was too old to get any money from then I would be happy to give him away either free or for next to nothing if it meant he had a happy, quality home for the rest of his life. Somethings you can't put a value on. He owes me nothing, he has given me love, friendship and a lot of fun to date. I would rather he end up with someone loving than ending up with someone who is prepared to pay but would possibly thrape him for all he's worth.
