My horse is 19 and for the last few years I have really only been hacking him. He got very reluctant to do schooling and I had him looked over by two different vets who did flexions and saw him trot up, but couldn't see much wrong so I just decided that our dressage days were over and didn't bother much.
He gets light exercise and is reasonably fit, and I was hoping to up the work and go on longer rides.
Horse was clearly not happy last week so I cut short my ride and had another vet to look today.
She gave him a good prod in various places and most of the time he took no notice, until he tried to bite me! She decided that it was hip/pelvis and as she said it a lot of things dropped into place. Obvious isn't it, when pointed out.
The one hoof is a different shape to the other, as it must be taking less weight (not that dramatic a difference) and one or two other things that were suddenly illuminated by lots of light bulbs.
I had been reassured by the previous examinations that there couldn't be much wrong, but at least I think there is logic to this. She said I can either go in for an extensive examination and possible injections, etc. or just treat conservatively at the moment with bute before a ride and see how it goes, which I am doing at the moment.
It just goes to show that if you think there is something not right, there is a reason, even if the reason is pretty obscure.
