Does anyone keep their horses where there is no one on-site overnight; i:e no houses around to keep an eye on them?

I've always kept mine at home, but we have recently bought a project house about 15miles away and I'm considering grazing the horses over there a couple of times a week in the summer. The builders will be there during the day, but there won't be anyone there overnight. It's remote, so no houses nearby. I'm wondering if I'm just a bit paranoid having always been lucky to just see them out of the window.

The ground I rent has a house across the street but their view into the field isn't great and they'd have to be upstairs looking out of the window to see anything.
I think a lot would depend on the area and the type of land and fencing also what your horses are like, calm and placid or complete demons?

I've read a first hand account of a lady who had a very settled herd, she was in the field and for some reason that she never did work out two of the mares ran flat out at each other and collided, one died and the other was seriously injured. I think this shows that you can never prevent some things happening even if you're there 24/7.

Many of us have yards or fields not at home, sometimes in isolated areas.

A horse/pony can just as easily damage itself/be damaged when you go out for the day, as it can overnight too.

OP, am envious of you being able to look out of the window at yours.
Mine are a 3.5 mile drive from home, yes there are horsey neighbours in adjacent yards or fields, but those who actually live nearby are not at all horsey.

My yard. There are farm houses around, but not with a view over the fields.

There was someone on site in a caravan until a few months ago, but it was a bit of a hole and unlikely to be inhabited now they've moved on. Gates are locked at night but I think even with someone on site it is unlikely a field accident or colic would have been picked up until daylight.

I've kept mine on livery yards before where nobody is there living on site. I've also kept on yards where nobody has noticed horses with colic, a ruptured bowel probably from a kick or horses caught up in their rugs and unable to move. I don't think having someone on site equates to peace of mind TBH so I don't worry about it. I just make sure I visit my horse daily and hope for the best when I'm not around.

They are generally sensible. The land is post and rail with thick hedgerows. They'd have to get through 3 padlocked gates to exit our property, so I'm 98% sure they'd stay where I put them (always a 1% doubt as you just never know!!)

Thank you FF, the only downside is non-horsey hubby gets to see them chewing on things they shouldn't then moaning at me !!
