My horse is 16 now and ive scoured the internet looking for insurance that covers vets fees but they only pay up to 1000 pound some of them , not worth the bother, will just save up a fund for her i think , just cancelled my petplan as they are the same any of you with older horses have any ideas ?

I'm with NFU and my boy is 18 yrs old and they still insure him. I think they don't insure over 16 yrs for the first time.

something i dont understand tbh how insurance companies write off everything over 16 very very odd to me, means i dont have long with either of mine and also NFU wouldnt let us insure Ted for LOU because he was over 11 or 12 i cant remember which they said grrr at them

Most insurers will continue to insure you as long as you've been with them for a certain time. I am with (what was) Equestrian Direct ATM and they've said they will insure my boy for full vets fees cover until he is 20 as I will have been with them since he was 13. I was planning to move him to Amtrust Equine (for various reasons, had other horses with them so I trust them) who have said the same thing - if I insure him with them before he is 15, they will continue to insure for VF until he is 20 at 5K per incident.

I am looking too for my 18 year old. From what i've found Petplan will do vets fees for illness to 19 I think but over that its accident only (same with NFU I think) so think I may have a go with saving a fund too just in case!

Have you tried Julie Andrews Horse Insurance Brokers? sorry perhaps you have but just in case, could be worth a dabble.

I gave up my old mares veteran insurance, it wasnt really worth it, i could only get cover for accident only no vet fees for illness. I just joined BHS to get liability insurance and when she has needed the vet, i just pay the bill and i have to say have probably saved money by doing this.

I am with petplan at the moment but the problem is that the help with vets fees is so low its not worth bothering with , if they will only pay a few thousand its not worth it , i can get my hands on that if something happened but couldnt get say , 10'000 if i needed it and they only pay small amounts not worth the ag, so from now on i will just join bhs as they give liability and personal cover and just save for the future , also vets are good they let you pay off some at a time as long as you pay what you agreex

they only cover injury check your policies now as you need to know for the future dont get caught out like my friend , tendon went didnt cover that horse too old , INJURY ONLY as in kick , cut doestn cover anything inside the horse, or illness

no untill 25 if insured before 20

Think you could be right. I'm getting quotes of around £400 with the trailer. She is priceless to us but only on the open market probably about £600/ £700 so maybe to save up is the way forwards...

Thank you! will phone them back I think I got the wrong end of the stick! Have tried KBIS but they are only paying a % of the bills which all seems a bit confusing... Maybe its just that Friday feeling!

But that's all you would get with any insurer, for a horse of ANY age. I have never ever had more than 5K of vets fees cover for any of my horses, regardless of how old they were. 5K per incident, unlimited incidents per year. And (*touches wood*) so far I haven't needed to claim more than 2K for anything with any of them either.

I don't really understand. Are you complaining that you can't get vets fees cover for £10,000 plus? If so, you won't get that anywhere, no matter whether your horse is 5, 15 or 25. 5K is the norm.

Your insurer would pay the first 5K and then if your bills go over that, you pay the rest. A friend of mine is currently at something like 6.5K. Her insurer (E&L!!) have paid the first 5K minus her excess and she is paying the rest because she's reached her limit.

Have you tried contacting the veteran horse society for advise - I am sure they would know which companies insure the mature horse.
