My little b*&%$&*d of a pony thinks nothing of smashing through the electric fence, and i don't know what to do now.

It is mains electric, and he is rug less, yet he appears to be able to lean on it and not feel a thing

Can anyone please offer any advice on stopping him?

I must point out that he is very nervous (rescue case) and difficult to catch, anything that will scare the living day lights out of him isn't really an option, as is putting up post and rail!!

Think I'm going to be having a similar problem with my filly after what happened this morning. Mains electric. Fully charged tapes. I turned her out this morning and she just turned around, pushed past me and kept on walking with the lines at the front of her chest. The fence stretched and stretched until it snapped and she trotted off, leaving me most purturbed and surrounded by broken tape and a snapped post. Bl**dy horse! Don't know WHAT I am going to do tomorrow

Its a nightmare when your horse/pony does this, isnt it. Mine is just the same, hes gone through post and rail, hedges and electric. This winter (touch wood) we seem to have cracked it! We have put up tall fencing, 3 strands of white tape and in front of that we have a lower fence of electrified rope. We have also abandoned use of tape gates and only use the field metal gate and so far this winter he has stayed put, first year ever. The difference seems to be the rope fencing, it is the only thing he has ever respected.

My cob is the same, no respect. I've got a 2 strand high fence then a single strand lower fence about a foot in front of it but he still manages to go through that (tonight included, breaking about 6 poles and loosing the tops off the little ones). You don't want to know the words coming out of my mouth. I thought I'd cracked it doing it like this.

Thanks for the suggestion about the rope fencing, I think I may give that a go. Can you use normal fence posts or will I have to buy news ones or just new insulators to go at the top? I currently have the waist height metal ones.

If mine do this (because they have rugs on so don't feel the top strand on their chests), I put a knee height strand up, so I zap them in the knee caps.
I do have some problems with my 3yr old though - she lifts the electric fence posts (the plastic ones) up with her teeth on the little square knob at the top, lays them flat, then walks through them like trotting poles. Grrrrrrrrrr.
