I'm not sure what i expected by am a bit surprised I have had no response at all to my share ad. Do you think it is becase I have said I would require small financial contribution ? He is on full livery so no jobs and I really cant justify the hassle and worry I would have with a 3rd party involved with my horse if no financial benefit. He isn't being ridden at all at present as I'm not well but is more than happy not ridden and is very well cared for and happy so while I would like him to do something it isnt imperative. Can anyone recommend other places to advertise - current just in saddlers/feed merchants

i advertised my horse for a share asking for money and had a response...in fact shes turned out great ! people should NEVER expect to be able to ride a horse for free ! especially if they have no jobs to do !!! my girl is poo/picking etc aswell as paying....pre-loved might be ok or horsemart/quest maybe ? x

That was kind of my feeling too ! I'm not that worried about him being ridden. horsemart is a good idea - I'm trying to keep it local so was a bit worried about on line stuff like preloved

that was my thought i wanted it to be fairly local too - but to be honest people arnt going to travel that far to ride a horse ! be careful who rings you too as you may get the odd person that thinks they know it all and cant rise :) good luck x

Potential sharers generally don't have their own horses, so don't go to saddlers / feed merchants that often! When I was looking for a share horse I checked Gumtree, Yours2Share, and Horsemart, so you might think of advertising online. Perhaps you could also put up an advert at a nearby riding school though that might attract less experienced riders.

I'm guessing you've tried asking around, but your instructor and your farrier will have loads of horsey contacts, so might be worth mentioning to them that you are looking for a sharer.

I've shared a few horses and being asked to contribute money has never put me off. Keeping horses is expensive, and why should someone else fund my riding?! However, it might be worth mentioning a ball park figure, so that people know you aren't expecting them to pay your whole livery bill!

Also, whereabouts are you? When I didn't have a horse to ride I was on these forums all the time getting my equine fix. Someone might just see this post.

A "contribution" is very fair, as someone else said, people should not expect to ride your horse for free but make it a realistic contribution. There is an offer of a share on another website where the animal is on grass livery "so only poo picking required" and they are asking for £100 a month which, to me, is all the livery plus a bit as I would hope that grass livery would be considerably less than £25 a week - you can get DIY with a stable for that!

I had no response for a while after my previous sharer got her own horse and was shocked as before I had lots of enquirers. I ask for a financial contribution and I don't think many people would expect to ride a horse for nothing as anyone who knows enough about horses would know they aren't exactly cheap! Agree with some of the other posts, Preloved is really good, as is Equine Adverts and depending on where you are in the country I have had a lot of response on Trade-it but not sure if that would be any good for you as it's a local thing. I also put my ad up in the riding school I work at and that's where I got my sharer - who is not a novice, and owns her own retired veteran! So not to say you wont get any experienced inquiries from a riding school :) good luck!
