Cant believe it our yard has put a ban on turn out- its crazy and i cant ride as my daughters off school for her summer holidays.
School holidays are a nightmare as it is for me, my horse is really too much for me at the best of times but at least i thought he could go out and be ridden once or twice a week but there's not a hope in hell i can get on him after 3 days in a stable!

I am SOOOOO pee'd off its untrue!
Is anyone else on restricted/no turn out at this time of year?

restricted yes but through choice, poppys fat and abby's broken so trying to restrict her movement without boxing her

y have u no turnout??

If the weather stays like this , we may have to restrict TO .. at the moment no , there are no restrictions

Why on earth is your yard on no turnout?!?!
I have to say it sounds like your horse needs turnout to burn off some energy from what you describe. I would be having a word with your YM/YO to explain the problem. If nothing can be done, if it were me I would suggest that if the situation is likely to continue beyond a couple of weeks you are paying for turnout and therefore could they either excercise your horse for free (horse walker/lunging/long rein etc) or reduce the price of the livery in order to compensate you.

Can I ask why?

In y/o words she's not having us trashing her fields until the rain stops and the ground dries up- its not her fault we cant ride (me and another livery who also has children and long working hours partner!) other liveries cope and they are working full time!

True but they can ride after work I cant my o/h wont be home until 9.30-2am for all of the summer 7 days a week

Would your YO let you section off a bit of the yard so your horse can have a wander, or let you turn out in the menage at all, if only whilst mucking out so he can have a leg stretch?

Could you lunge before riding, or ask some-one more experienced to sit on him for a few minutes to get the kinks out of his legs before getting on him if he's going to be fizzy?

I kept mine in this morning, to save the fields (I have nothing against the horses getting wet) as although we're lucky our ground doesn't get too bad the horses are on restricted grazing atm and it would just be churned up after all this rain. Luckily we have an enclosed yard and an old cow pen which I can turn them out in so they're not just shut in the stable.

Sorry, they might be useless suggestions depending on what your yard/YO are like, but I've been there and it is frustrating so you have my sympathy.

Mines not allowed out at night, but can be out all day which is perfect for me tbh as shes a bit porkers, I'd would be moving yards if they stopped turn out espesially as you cannot excercise your horse, and if they've stopped it this time chances are they will do it again

Unfortunatly our contracts do state turnout is down to the owner and weather permitting.

They wont exercise my horse as they know what he can be like!

Nope- Pony is free to trash field all she likes- although won't as she barely lifts her head from the grass all day!

Have never been and will never be on a yard where turnout is restricted due to rain?!

QR-

Is it really that wet????

I genuinely mean that, as I know we've had rain recently but our ground is still rock hard!! Ok perhaps not rock hard anymore, but I still wouldn't want to do lots of fast work on it at the mo.

We do it on the yard in the winter too.. the reason is because the drainage on the fields isn't great and they become poached and like a big mud bath if we have lots of rain. Usually this doesn't happen in the summer but it occasionally does so to attempt to save the ground we keep horses in and rotate the use of one paddock for all of the horses.

Or something like that as I am told by the YM

Its not all that wet- we have had a lot of rain but when you lead a horse from the field its not like he has mud on his legs or anything, just sticky dirty hoof mud!

Thanks ISHY - I honestly didn't realise that other parts of the country have had as much rain as they have!

Admittedly we are still turning out and will carry on doing so unless it rains all week but we have had quite alot mpre rain and the path to the field (ok it is on a hill) has flooded and its neally at the top of my wellies in parts ( yep its REALLY fun going through it with a leaping 17hh ID behind me

)

I think its the amount of rain that we've had in such a short space of time that makes people panic and stop turnout - we haven't yet as I'm in charge for the week and don't want 30 horses to look after

Yes, I've heard of flooding or near flooding!!! We are OK - My two have the highest point of the whole yard, but we do have T/O restricted in winter - mainly because the bottom end struggles to cope, and some owners leave their horses out beyond whne its sensible and they tear about trashing the ground,

I keep my ponies at home, and I have had to restrict them to a field that I am happy to trash (it doubles as starvation for the more lardy which is three of the four!!) with hay, otherwise I would have no grass for the rest of the year!

I think it depends on where you are, I am in the fens with nasty flat fields that don't drain well at all. Unfortunately I was using probably the worst/lowest of them when the rain REALLY started last week and half is poached after Fridays rainy efforts alone and still is a long way from drying out.

I have exactly the same child/time problem at the moment, my six year old is usually really keen to hack with me on his bike, but not as much when its P'ing it down!! Do you have a school you can chuck him out in for an hour or so??

i'm really shocked that they have put a turnout ban!

I know my yard is very lucky as we have well draining fields - some even stay out 24/7 so i never impose restrictions.

Which part of the country are you in? i didnt realise anywhere had had really bad rainfall?

I'm sorry but how ridiculous and another reason why i am so glad I am not on a livery yard and can do what I like with my horses!

I feel for you, I'd be fuming - where are you that it's that wet? We've had tonnes of rain too but, although our fields are getting a bit muddy in places there's still plenty of grass and the ground is very firm underneath as we had such a long spell of dry weather before. In fact the other day when it stopped raining for a while and the sun and wind came out, the ground started drying very qucikly so it's not that soaked.

why don't you get together with the other lady and help look after each others kids, so you can each ride maybe not everyday but a couple of times a week more?

We still haven't had any rain, I am thinking we must be in a different country not county to everyone else!

The ground is rock hard and the grass is dead, I put a big round bale of hay in the fields this morning as ned's look hungry!

I can't believe it is too wet to turn out...weird!

thank god for my yard! It seems to permanently rain in Wales but most of the yards I've viewed turnout is 24/7 through summer usually from May until October.

I'd absolutely hate being on a yard that banned turnout when it rains - it'd be a nightmare and more importantly Tia would hate being cooped up. She's out in rain now unrugged stuffing her face hoping I won't turn up and she's never the one waiting by the gate looking miserable wanting to come in (unless it's winter and feeding time!).

Thats a great idea!!... Sometimes I really miss having mine on a yard!!

If I remember later I'll take some photos of the mud/water, I tried a round bale of hay to keep them still in the soggiest field to stop them trashing it - Didn't work though water got deeper and I gave up after friday and moved them anyway:(

Just a thought OP, but do you have to buy your bedding and Hay/haylage through your YO? If so she'll be making some extra money for herself and then some!

I can understand what you are saying but surely if all the horses go out when the fields are really wet and muddy then you would soon be on here saying my horse has no grass in a few weeks time after the field had been wrecked.
As we all know what a mess they make when it is wet, we also all know how long it takes to recover afterwards.
I keep mine at home and do allow them a paddock to trash in the winter that has all year to recover.
Couldnt they do the same at yours and have turnout on a rotation basis until it dries up.

i understand she dont want her fields trash but horses need turn out surly to got she can sacafice a small area so the horses can go out or even to a roatate system so some days your horse goes out then so on so the horses get turn out!

We had flooding Friday so ours all came in, but our summer fields are so steep when really wet they are lethal - so they come down for safety reasons, and as the bottom paddocks (our winter ones) were under water, they had a day or two in. Paddocks dried and they went back out Sunday and are going back up to the summer fields tonight.

So ours is only to prevent accidents when the fields are dangerous, as soon as they aren't as wet they can go back, and if the bottom paddocks are only muddy, not under 6-8" of water, we can use them.

Exceptional circumstances... I can't complain!

What a nightmare! My 4 (well 3 and a half as one's a Shetland X) are out all year, however they are electric fenced with less than half the 6 acre field to roam in due to weight issues. I say this because I have 4 ponies on what must be about 2 acres - this field doesn't get moved or enlarged and looks absolutely fine, no bogginess etc. I know it's been raining, but it's not like we're having a monsoon.

Just here to sympathise really, mine would go bonkers if they were locked up 24/7 as well
