we have 150 odd cattle, 100 sheep AND newbron lambs IN and 200 sheep OUT. 5 horses IN and 20 OU!! and there is absolutely NO water here.. the catles water trough has been completely frozen and there is no water in the pipes. the only water we can get is in the house so we have to do countless trips back and fore to the hiouse with buckets to give ALL the animals water. and it not getting better. the catle will have to go out tomorow in the field to get water (god knows how wel get them back in) and we have lost many lambs due to the cold and the weather. they are in but its just soo cold for them. and we only have 4 infra red lamps..... oh god hope things get better :S

You have my sympathy . we have had a similar situation having to transport water from a nearby river bloody hard work .Hope situation improves soon for you .

When I read the Title I thought "FGS just get a water carrier and get on with it"
150 cattle, 100 sheep and lambs to boot?
If you are managing to get water to that lot I take my hat off to you!

Oh thought! Could you not beg/borrow/steal a water bowser on wheels? Maybe you could fill it by hose from the house and drive it (assuming you have a tractor/4x4) to the animals?

I know this may sound a bit dramatic but could you ask the Fire Brigade for help. I certainly don't mean dialling 999 emergency call but perhaps give them a call to explain your predicament and ask if they could bring along a large container of water to help the animals? Worth a try in this un usual weather. Good luck

I hate this frozen water everywhere, roll on the thaw.

And burst defrosted pipes, water logged fields, boggy gateways........ Do you ever feel like you just cant win??

excellent suggestion tictac, though the emergency serivces are stretched aT moment! is there a neighboring farmer who has a bowser and water which still works? roll on the thaw! then we will all be flooded and another set of problems to deal with, but it will feel tropical!!

I am a milk recorder travelling round dairy farms and the one i went to yesterday have a similar problem. They are lighting small fires underneath the troughs in the field to defrost them! Would that be something you could do?

if i lived near you, i'd offer to come and help. my kids are bored stupid being off school and we're spending most our time to and fro to our horses to do water and hay, jst to do something and coz we love it!

but its really not funny when you've got young animals to care for. been there, done that. the fire brigade is a good suggestion, deffo give them a try. big hugs oxox

A Nightmare for you with so many animals to care for. As has been suggested - a tanker?? or could you obtain a bowser - we have a small one but most of the farmers in France have them for summer use when paddocks are dry and ponds dry up.

It is cold here and we are having to lug 40 buckets of water from a stand pipe we have lagged to our stable yard.

Do you have one stand pipe you could get working outside - we put a sack of straw over one of ours and are able to defrost it with hot water each morning.

Poor you, it is terrible at the minute.

We have a bowser but the water line that we use is frozen , so that is also of no use. Fourtuanly all the horses are weeing normally , so can only asume they are getting what they need from the snow, not ideal and we do what we can, but not nearly as good as normal.

Fingers x for you, with all that lot

thanks guys... its just sooo annoying and tireing. and we are running out of shed as the lambs are popping out like mad :S hopefully wel try again at melting the water in the hose pipe but more snow forcasted tomorrow.. GOD!!

Omg how awful

I thought we had it bad filling umpteen containers twice a day for 12 horses

,will certainly make me think twice next time i complain!

This will not help with the water to the fields, but we have thawed out our hose in the sink (big belfast jobby) then drained it down each time it has been used, when reconected run water from the hot tap through it (which clears any small ice blockage) then use as normal for the horses inside buckets. It is a pain, but not as much of a nuisnce as carrying all the water out in buckets.
Hope you can sort something out soon as your situation sounds horrid.
