i love them to go out but the field is just mud!!

i may as well be on other yard and ride out!

i was off today but have no-one to ride out with and dont want to go its rubbish

I have no winter turnout and ours are all fine!!!! They do go in the school for 20mins every other day though, as not ridden at the mo, but when ridden they don't mine!!
You'll be fine and enjoy the hacking!!!

We have no winter turnout but have a horse walker and a lungeing pen so they can get out if not being ridden. It hasn't done them any harm any other winter

Whereabouts in Manchester are you?

I'm in Lancashire and decent livery yards that do winter turnout are very hard to find so you have my sympathy.

The yard I'm on now (my first winter on this yard) doesn't do winter turnout (except when it's really dry) and that's the reason I'm moving to a different yard. Some horses cope fine without turnout but I couldn't cope with my own guilt. Both my boys are used to being out as often as possible and though not going mental I just felt I needed to be somewhere they could go out even if it was just two or three times a week. Also with the sport I compete at (endurance) plenty of turnout is essential otherwise they lose muscle tone and condition. My new yard (can't move there until end of January though

) has turnout and fabulous hacking, plus indoor school, horse walker and a human toilet (what luxury!). I can't wait to move

To be honest you'll probably feel worse about it than your horse. If he's ridden everyday and on the horse walker, plus some loose time in the arena then I'm sure he'll be fine. I reckon about 80% of horses on livery in the NW must have zero winter turnout.

i am in SALFORD!!

my horse is currently on a ayard in astley which is 8 miles out of MCR

im moving to Clifton which is in salford and on the clifton marina which is like a huge park although most of it is shut off to horses.

Well I could not do it and would rather have turnout for my horse than other facilities...but each to their own!

Same here. Guess some of us are more lucky than others though, as it does sound like turnout in the OP's area is pretty hard to find.

It depends on the horse. My boy is a laid back kind of guy, he has been in for over a month now and is just getting better and better to ride. It will be nice when he can get outside but he seems to be handling this just fine.

I also wouldn't do it. I'd never ever take away turnout for my horses. I think they could cope with overnight stabling but that's it. Id also choose turnout over facilities anyway.

Yep me also! I personally would rather have my ponies running about in the mud and have to hay the field up so at least they can still interact with each other and be ponies.

I couldn't do it either. I'd give up a stable and everything else, (except water, a little shelter & a few horsey pals) in order to have turnout.

but i know its hard, and its not always easily available.

I think that, as long as you take the time to make sure they are entertained and properly exercised, not having winter turnout is not such a big deal. Our turnout consists of paddocks of 3 - 4 horses in each, which we have for about 6 weeks and then move. It is in our horses' best interests to keep them in on rainy days because the fields just become churned and disgusting. Last winter I think they got to go out about 1 day in 5. And you know what? None of them turned a hair! We would turn them out in batches in the indoor for a few minutes each morning, whilst we mucked out, and then rode or lunged in the evening. They were perfectly fine and our paddocks lasted the winter without getting too trashed. I would far rather that set-up than trying to battle with a cold, hungry, pee'd off horse in the pitch dark and pouring rain.
They get used to it, as long as they're getting enough exercise and entertainment. Good excuse to trim feathers, pull manes, deep groom, strap, all those pampering things that my mare loves.

From your description I can fully understand your reasons for moving.

Personally turnout is a must for me. However, if it's a toss up between the two yards you describe - then I too would move to the one without turnout.

I agree with gedenskis_girl. Am also in Lancs with no winter turnout & it seems not many people locally have it.

Personally I'm quite happy without. I've had my new boy about 6weeks now & he was turned out daily until the day I bought him but being in full time doesn't seem to be having any ill effect. I ride 6days a week & we have a lunge pen to turnout in for short periods & that does fine for me.

Sounds like your new yard will be much better for you so I wouldn't worry too much 'bout the lack of turnout.
