Noisy and Vocal Foal ???

Has anyone experienced this before?
First Homebred Filly, almost six months, easy to do, lovely to handle, textbook first six months, however,
Have never seen anything like the levels of neighing, squeeling and what can only be described as general chatter?
She will neigh out in the field, neigh at birds in the field, sometimes she will just look up from grazing have a little neigh and then carry on. She whinnies when you speak to her, she neighs at the top of her lungs at the post van coming past her field etc etc.
None of my others respond to her, Dam is vocal in the stable at feed time, but not excessive, Is she just testing her voice box out? Will she be like this for ever :rolleyes: ???
Having had weanlings and youngsters before I have honestly never seen anything like it?
Any experiences welcome!!
 
Thanks Spring Feather, not something I have ever heard of before, the last yearling I bought was stabled next to the mare for two years and he didn't pick up her grumbling and whinnying at feed times?? Its very odd!
 
Interesting Fuzzy Furry, I hadn't even thought of that, but yes I think so, she can hear the feed bin lids in the shed and come hurtling in thinking she is getting something, also if you call her from our lane, she will neigh at you and come over, even when my others complete ignore you?
Incidentally do deaf horses know how to neigh, I wonder, often profoundly deaf people struggle to speak??
 
Interesting that Fuzzy Furry said that as I was wondering about something similar .. eyes. Usually neighing is a 'where are you' type of 'speak' so if it's excessive then I'd have the eyes checked. Probably nothing and maybe the foal is just a worrier (or nosy!) and constantly needs to know where everyone is and what they're doing.
 
Thanks, yep eyes are completely fine, ( she was vet checked for her passport & shots) Certainly not a worrier, probably a bit too far the other way tbh, Being overly nosy could be the answer, no one responds to her neighing, poor pony, perhaps she feels they are ignoring her lol??

ETA FuzzyFurry, her paddock is right outside my kitchen window, and ive been home the past few days and it has been constant lol!!

My boy is very vocal . . . I know people who have heard their horses call perhaps 10-15 times the whole time they have had them, but I probably hear Kal's voice at least five times a day - usually more . . . perhaps this filly is just a noisy girl?

My big boy is very vocal, neighing at me all the time, in his box, out in the field, when I yell back to him when he's in the trailer... Each morning he puts his head over the door to "shout" at me, probably for being later or earlier than the day before or something lol! Just a happy noisy boy.
 
Thanks PolarSkye & Connielove that's very interesting, Ive always laughed at the inaccurate portrayal of horses neighing on tv and in films, but this filly really is like that!
 
I've got a mare that is fairly vocal (although not to the extent of your foal!)
She routinely whinnies at me whenever I first appear on the yard, or go to catch.
She also whinnys at feed time. Plus is very vocal when rolling and sometimes when sleeping/dreaming.

I suppose, just like humans, some are more extrovert than others. Your foal sounds like a real character :)
 
My Trakehners talk quite a lot to each other especially if one or two of them are leaving the herd, and sometimes to us (one of them was in vet hospital for an operation as a not long weaned foal and he whinnied pitifully at me as I finally wrenched myself away and left him after a hospital visit for the drive home on a cold winter's night which upset me even more :-o!!). Your filly sounds lovely and a real character :-)
 
I was talking to my boy's breeder this week, and we got to chatting about what he was like as foal. As a grown horse, he's very noisy and likes to 'chat'. Apparently he's been like it since day one and his dam is the same.
 
Thankfully I only have 2 this year who fill the category "a character" (or "a little tit") One is a rather nice colt who loves coming up to see and taste you - you just can't get rid of him. The other is a very friendly and noisy madam - who regularly gives me heart failure (today it was by popping over a 3'3" electric fence from a standstill - and clearing it with a GOOD 6" to spare!!)

JanetGeorge, that is for sure a genuine way to give you heartfailure, how big are your foals? Lol, thankfully she hasn't done anything quite like that recently, although she did go through our foal proof fencing on first day of turnout with mum and ended up in a ploughed field ?? luckily she didn't go far and OH went round on the quad and threw her back in, escaped sheep style :) :) As my only Homebred Im hoping I haven't bred one with equine Tourettes! ;)
 
lol, Jezebel isn't that big (and yes, that IS her name - what else can you call a foal whose Mum is Hussy!) She's not very big yet - only 4 months old and mother was a maiden. Mum is an IDxTB - and Dad is a small ID (16hh) so I'd guess Jezebel won't be much more than 16.1 tops! Her Dad got (unfairly) marked down at stallion grading for (amongst other things) lack of scope jumping - but he's a VERY good jumper - and grand-dam on the Mum's side was The Parson, who threw a lot of good jumpers. I'd rather they jumped it clean than went through it!
