non-heating feed?

Hi all, as somo of you know, having a few problems with a very fizzy pony!
have thought about changing his mix. he's on just ordinary mix (pasture mix) at the moment. baring in mind he only gets 1/4 (less than) a day.
would it be worth changing to maybe pony nut?(pasture nuts)

Have you thought about cutting out the mix / nuts alltogether and feeding an unmolssed chaff like Hifi light and a multivitamin and mineral supplement.

Is he a good doer?
 
this is the thing..... he is on large scoop of sugarbeet and chaff plus bran twice a day as he's not a good doer.
he tends to drop of quite quickly x

Is it unmolassed SB?
You could try a combination of pasture nuts(excellent fibre source) and grass nuts(nutrious and an energy source) neither of which should fizz up your boy,and experiment with the ratio til he has enough energy but is still holding his weight.You could also add something like Soya Oil to his diet which is slow release energy but will help him to hold his weight

yeah, its the unmolassed kind (speedybeet)
grass and pasture nuts sounds good. he needs something just not anything thats going to add to his wild ways! its funny, because in the summer i have the opposite problem! a fat pony how can barley get himself out the stable!
 
I presume it's the grass that makes him fat

I feed a pure forage diet - and am now using simple systems.

I would drop the mix and try pony nuts instead and you could try feeding plain alfa - such as the greengold which contains no molasses.

If you have time have a look at the simple systems website. I am really pleased with the way my two look and they have lots of food to eat to stop them getting bored. My two just have greengold and luciestalks and will be getting a little unmolassed beet shortly as the grass dies off.
