Have you got your provisional? You need to get the provisional liscence for Category C and C1 which are LGV and HGV. (to get your provisional you need to have a medical aswell)

Test/lessons are around 2k. Its advised you do your theory before taking lessons.

Im going mine in a weeks intensive course around feb time next year hopefully if ive saved enough money. Im 24, been driving normally since i was 17.

you can not apply for your provisional HGC or LGV 2 untill you are 21. not sure about class 3 (upto 7.5 tons) and trailer my OH is a transport Manager with all his so he drives me but am thinking I must do it. It works out very expensive

I am taking one at the moment, the Class 2

I have got my theory booked for next friday. The place nearest to me for lessons won't let me start learning before doing lessons, I am just going to do my one up to 7.5tonnes - costs £745 for 20 lessons and 89 for the practical test! I am 21, think you can do the one up to 7.5tonnes when you are 18 though

QR....I'm 25, been driving normally since I was 17, did my trailer test at 21 as well, took my LGV last year. I was told that HGV doesn't exist anymore, it is all L (large) GV. The up to 7.5t test is your C1, you can take that at 18, then your C is what used to be your HGV Class 2. YOu have to be 21 to take that and as PG says, you have to have your provisional/theory/medical etc.
I was told there is is no point doing the up to 7.5t one as it costs the same (mine in total cost about £1000 for ecverything), same test etc, you might as well do the C (old class 2) one as then you can drive anything apart from artics. I think they are right really, as I know when we trade up from our elderly bedford one day, we will look for a small HGV, a 10 or 12 tonner, as then we could carry all three horses (a 720kg ID, a 550kg WB and a 450kg arab) and have plenty of weight left for living etc.
I really enjoyed doing my lessons and test actually, once I got the hang of it, driving the 16t lorry I had for my lessons was fine - and made my 7.5t feel small!!
