Non-horse owners with own grooming kit?

I don't own my own, I share and help out on some yards. But I've been doing so for long enough to have preferences for various bits of grooming kit.

I already have my own hi-viz for both horse and self which I used on my old share and have washed and started to use on my new share. I was thinking it would also be a lot easier to grab grooming essentials from my own tidy little box rather than hunt through heaps of owner's things in the dark. Would you think it odd if your sharer/yard helper turned up with their own little grooming kit?
 
I would think if you are sharing a horse, then that is fine, and will be much easier for you to have your own kit.

However if you are helping with lots of horses on different yards, you need to be a bit careful, as you don't want to be accused of spreading anything from yard to yard. eg ringworm, etc, etc.
 
I only let my brushes be used on my horse. It's just common sense, don't want things spreading around.

FWIW when I had two horses they each had their own grooming kit/towels etc.

I wouldn't like anybody else using my hairbrush :p

Agree with this, keep the grooming kit for use on one specific horse. Having your own hi viz tabard/jacket is a good idea in case the owners don't have any spare.

I agree with this, and when I had more than one horse, each had thier own kit
 
Not at all, as long as there was nothing I didn't want used on my horse in there. Eg a spray the horse was allergic to or an unsuitable hoof preparation. We all have preferances for tools we like to use. If I had a sharer I'd be pleased if they had their own kit and high viz. I also think that it will make a sharer feel more involved with the horse if they have their own kit.
 
Not at all, I'd think it was very good of them and of course super organised, we all have our preferences to things and without sounding awful but in some cases the owners stuff can be a bit tatty or not be of much use at times.
 
id not have other brushes used on my boy other than his own just in case of things being spread, he caught lice from another horse on old yard, it took months to clear up & he really isnt the easiest of beasts to "just" pop lotion or spray on.

each has their own for a reason & mine also get taken home and washed monthly, with disposable bits like sponges being replaced.
 
Brushes are something I am anal about... I make sure that my sharers only use my brushes on Holly (although if I am honest I would allow them to use their own if they were newly bought and had never been near another horse) I don't even let people borrow my hoofpick nevermind my brushes :o I know a girl who rides a few horses on my yard and uses her own Kit.. it makes me cringe :o
 
I had my own grooming kit when I shared it was kept in my box along with my hat and a few other bits. I now use it on my boy, it had been sitting round for a while not being used so I washed it and used it on him when he arrived. I added a few bits to it aswell but it saved me a few pennies when he arrived :D
 
If I were particular about items of grooming kit that I liked to use, some being unusual ones then I would buy such items specifically for use on the share horse. They would then belong to the horse rather than me if you get me?
 
I have specific brushes for my horses, EG Captain has a goat hair extra soft brush for around his ears and eyes as he is very sensitive about that area. But if you were my sharer and you had a similar brush then no probs. I feel same about sharing brushes, mine have their own, colour coded and kept separately . Anal me? :p

Mine also had their own colour coded grooming kits. Even though they are on the same yard and turned out side by side I like to keep their kit spearate. They have their own tack, saddle cloths and rugs as well. I did use an underrug this winter that belonged to one on another but washed it before and after - anal, moi! If I had a sharer I would be happy for then to use their own kit as long as they only used it on that horse and preferably kept it at the yard so the temptation to use it on something else was not there if you see what I mean but tbh my stuff is decent and well kept so I can't see much issue with using the horses own kit.
 
oh dear, listening to most other people, I'm feeling very slapdash by making my two horses share the grooming kit.
Obv. I'd not do it if either one had a problem, but they're both shiney and healthy so hopefully all will remain OK. :)

I was thinking of using brushes etc on the one horse at a time (ie if I had to change share I'd wash/buy new for the new horse and not use my kit for general helping out at RDA etc) because I do get the hygiene point.

At the moment I'm very carefully being unfriendly with other horses on the share yard as share horse is being treated for an infection which I don't want to spread.

Having said that I've never been to a yard that didn't share hoof picks (and, for RDA/RS/full liveries, often brushes etc too) pretty indiscriminately so I expect there are plenty of 'cleaner' people on HHO than I've been trained to be!

Mine have a grooming kit each, but my sharer also had her own grooming kit for the little 'un. But she only used it on my pony not any others.
 
I don't have a horse (yet) but I do have a grooming kit. I used to compete in RC competitions on riding school horses, and finding any sort of brush on the yard was a challenge, and if you did find a brush it would probably put more dirt on than it took off! No good for trying to turn a horse out correctly for a show!

I didn't have a full kit when I shared, and just used the owners kit, although I did have my own hoof pick which I used to keep on me because the owner had a habit of popping it in her pocket and taking it home by mistake!

I wouldn't think it odd if a sharer brought her own kit to use but wouldn't want it being used on other peoples horses. If it was new or freshly washed then I wouldn't have an issue.

Though to be honest I'd probably only take stuff down with me that the owner didnt already have because I wouldn't want to loose my own kit if I didn't need it there. Some yards grooming kit goes astray pretty regularly.
 
A lot of the teenage helpers have their own little grooming kits, though they aren't sharers or anything like that. To be honest, it saves them hunting for the school's general purpose set that lazy bums don't leave back where they belong!
 
As long as it would only be used one one/my horse, no problem. I actually used to worry about breaking other peoples things so asked if I could get my own.
 
I use one grooming kit for all horses . They live in a herd anyway, so they share any germs and lurgies already. In 20 years never had a problem. New horses obviously get checked for the usual (ringworm, etc) and I might have a few brushes for scrufy horses, but mostly I use the one and only brush for about 5 horses.
 
I have a few bits and bobs, mainly since I could never find the grooming kit belonging to the owner of my last share horse, and buying my own was the path of least resistance:rolleyes:

You do need to be scrupulous about cleaning kit between horses though IMO unless they are living together anyway in which case it becomes a moot point. I wouldn't use this stuff on another horse until it had been given a good wash.
 
I think some posters are being abit OTT, when I had 2 horses they shared everything, they went out in the paddock together so it would be a waste of time keeping things seperate for hygienic reasons. Plus I cant imagine you would wash you hands each time you handled a different horse on the same yard

I don't have seperate kit for mine - they live together so I can't really see how it would help! They share buckets, headcollars and rugs too... :eek:
 
I don't have my own horse but I have shared other peoples, I always kept in back of my car; headcollar, lead rope, numnah, hoof pick, body brush, high vis exercise sheet and high vis tabbard. I basically kept the things that had a habit of 'walking' on a busy livery yard as I got fed up of turning up and not being able to find stuff. I would just wash and disinfect anything if I was taking on a new horse. WD40 is also useful to have in the winter as I found out when the field gate paddlocks froze!!
 
We have 3 horses....and in theory they have their own stuff ( poor highlands is mainly pink and sparkly bless him- blame daughter) but in practice I tend to use whatever is to hand......apart from tack that is.

None of them are infested....they go out together and groom each other anyway so.....

If I had a sharer/helper I wouldnt mind them having their own stuff to use on my horses, but I would be less keen if they were using the kit on horses at another yard too.....( in case she took the lurgy from mine elsewhere, as much as anything:eek:;):D)
