Non Horsey - Cutting your own hair

Well, last night I managed to dye my own hair. After getting most of the dye across my bathroom, my hair actually turned out a success and has saved me loads on going to the hairdressers.

I am not really a fan of hairdressers as I can't really make small talk about holidays and the latest fashion. Having a horse puts paid to fashion, shoes and holidays!

Anyway, it got me thinking, can you trim your own hair? I have really long hair and as I haven't had it trimmed in a year, it is probably due.

So, how many of you trim your own split ends? Is it a wise thing to do?
 
I do , can even do a style now. Also do OH and the boys. All trial and error it grows out anyway. Hairdressers are really scary people , I always used to get talked into something I didnt want , hate it , then go home and re do it. So now I just spend the money (they charge loads) on ponies!!!!!!!!!!!

i do the sides (have a long fringe - or did till it grew out)!.... but i would never cut my own hair!!!

costs £5 here to get my hair trimmed every 12 months :D
 
I've cut my own hair in the past from long to short but I have quite wavy/curly hair so if it wasn't completely straight, it wasn't that noticeable! Now I go to the hairdressers every 6 weeks as having a professional cut and colour does make a difference even though I hate small talk too!
 
I've cut my own hair for years and wouldn't set foot in a hairdressers now, they never did it how I liked it anyway!

There are some vids on you tube that show you how to cut layers etc very simply.
 
I haven't been to a hairdressers for years, after a couple of bad experiences and one totally disastrous one - all I asked for was a trim and she took most of my hair off!

I'll add a method to those pictured above. It gives a layered look. Brush and comb hair thoroughly, take all hair to top of head as for an extremely tight ponytail. Hold ponytail straight up in the air. Keeping hair taut, twist, either direction is fine. This will emphasise the difference in lengths so twist more times for greater difference. Cut straight across at desired length. I find this pretty reliable, even after a couple of bottles, which is when I usually get the urge to cut my hair.
 
Used to go to the hairdresser regularly for dye and cut. Now with two horses to support have resorted to doing it myself but only trimming fringe. Found the best way to rinse dye off is to stand in the shower, you get a really good rinse and no mess.
 
I've cut my own hair for years, and very smart it looks too.

Every five or six weeks, out come the clippers (human, not horse!) and the No4 comb, BZZZZZZZ, job done :D

I did accidentally fit the No3 comb once, but as I was the boss of the (tiny) company I worked for at the time, no one said a thing :rolleyes:
 
I can barely trim a tail straight so don't even consider doing mine! My hairdressers don't do small talk though, which is good!
