Non horsey husbands...bless!

I've managed to avoid the title of 'Husband' so far, but over the past 5 years, my other half has been indoctrinating me into this strange world with it's own language and customs. Where 'hacking' is a nice trip out rather than something you do with an axe, where you can't use 'tack' to pin a notice to a corkboard, where 'deep litter' is a good thing, where a 'chestnut' isn't something you'd want to roast, nor a 'cob' something to be sliced, buttered and dipped in your soup.

I've been taught to muck out stables, mix feed, fill haynets, identify colic, wield a shavings fork and had the additional permissions on my older licence put to use pulling trailers and driving lorries. I can now change rugs, tack up, lunge and even ride (with a reasonable record of not falling off).

I started off Non-Horsey....... but my conversion has been both subtle and insidious! To all my brothers out there in relationships with these horsewomen, they are a cunning and devious breed, be careful - they'll get you too!

Excellent there is hope for mine yet....he did build show jumps recently

He tries.

my ex was non horsey. my 17h tb used to take the biscuit quite a bit by chasing him round the field with his teeth barred and stepping on him whenever he could! i should mention that my 5 yr old nephew used to handle my giant boy and he was a lamb to do anything with on the ground. he just didnt like my ex. my horse had a few issues with whips due to his past and i was slowing introducing him to me jut holding one quietly on him. so far so good. i then made the huge huge mistake of asking my ex to pass me a whip whilst i was riding. he hadnt a clue that he should have passed it gently to me from the side and seemed quite bemused being knocked on to his backside as my horse had decided to bolt away from this mad man throwing this evil whip at his head! he hated the fact that my horse didnt like him and was trying to get me to sell him. which i am glad to say i didnt even entertain this thought!

moral of the story...never get a horsey woman to choose between her horse or her non horsey bf! you will always lose!

I have to admit my OH is fab with the horses, when i met him he was told 'i have horses they will always come first so if you dont like it then there is no point starting a relationship haha'
11 years on and he has always been great! He has always helped as and when he can. When i was working long hours i used to go down in a morning get everything done and he would go and fetch them in at night and feed them.

He knew when my old girl had colic and rang me straight away, got her up and walked her till i got there, he has been squashed, trodden on and even had his hand kicked and broke but still loves them lol!

He has the odd ride, has no style but sticks on haha!

He also used to muck out 3 days a week for me, although has never mastered haynets, he hates them haha!. He was as as upset as me when i lost my mare in may 2012 and never complained when i wanted another one!

Sadly he has epilepsy and last 2 years his fits have been really bad so he has been unable to work or be around the horses by himself but he still gets up early with me every morning to help me muck out etc before work and comes with me at night to fetch them in! Finances are tight but we manage! i work long hours as well as care for him when i am home lol!

My horses adore him and seem to know to be careful around him! sure they love him more than me lol ;)

My ex boyfriend once said "either those horses go or I do" which is why he is an ex!

Mine decided that if we ever moved in together that the only way I was keeping my boy was if we could do pony rides so he earned his keep :eek3: I hope his money is keeping him company at night...

There are such lovely and entertaining posts here, this is such a great thread :) ..and more pictures please!! The ones posted are priceless!

I have been trying to teach my boyfriend how to put a head collar on correctly for over 12 months now and he still can't do it! :D
He is supportive however, I mean he moved out of his lovely town house and bachelor pad to move in to the middle of the countryside to a cottage about the same size of one floor in his old place so I would move in and we could live somewhere with land and stables allowing me to bring my beloved New Forest pony home who had been on loan for 12 months. He's too big to ride my pony really but he did come riding with me in Portugal earlier this year and it is safe to say that he isn't a natural but at least he tried and he does mention occasionally that he'd like a shire horse! He loves my pony which is good and helps me turnout some mornings but I think that's as far as it'll go.. For now ;)
