After researching about adding magnesium to my mares diet to help take an edge off her, I gave it go a go and haven't really found a difference which i presume is due to her not having lowered levels of magnesium. I am now looking for a calmer that is not magnesium based as she will soon lose her field partner and is also a bit excitable at the moment and needs to just chill a bit!

Can anyone recommend and calmer that don't contain magnesium?

Valerian (if competing check the ruling body guidelines and rules!)
Chamomile
Hawthorn
Vervain
Brewers yeast

Also reduce any unnecessary sugars in the diet.

We don't compete so not worried about valerian although I have seen a couple of horses on V Calm that have almost been dopey which i would like to avoid!
She is a very good doer so is on a small feed of non mollassed chaff for her supplements.
Also looking at the L-tryptophan ones but most of these seem to be combined with magnesium.
I will have another look tomorrow as it is late ut just wondered if there are any that are worth a try to see if makes any difference.

Actually that is not quite correct Bede - cool calm and collected produce 2 versions, one with magnesium and one without.

And for what it is worth, neither worked on my 'special' lad, although have heard good reports from others.

Is she getting a lot of grass? If so then maybe restrict that rather than going down the calmer route. Mine totally loses the plot if he gets too much grass and is a changed pony when on a starvation paddock!

I use Valerian cordial by Lincoln when I need to. It works wonders on my young rescue. She is settling nicely now.
