My guy is usually turned out without a fly rug as he just seems to get sweaty in them. The flies seem to be particularly bad this year though and I can’t always get to him in the morning to douse him in fly spray.

Any recommendations for a non-sweaty one? He is quite broad across the chest so nothing too tight there either.

His current one is a PE super lite one and it fails on both counts. It is a fewest years old now though so they might have changed them now.

Mine is exactly the same. I’ve just her a swish mesh fly rug, swish fit her really well anyway, she’s a Welsh D with a broad chest. I have 3! She also sweats in fly rugs but this one seems ok! I’ve not got her in it at the moment though when it’s 30 odd degrees as I think she’d cook! https://swish-equestrian.co.uk/products/mesh-fly-rug-burgundy

Don’t get the nylon one though, we had that one and she sweated a lot in it so we sold it on.

so although mine are stabled in the day i still need to rug my TB as he gets hysterical even in the stable with the few flies!

after much experimentation i have gone for the Rambo protector which is stiffer mesh, tough, good airflow and good for broad types.

(overnight in the field he has an Amigo Aussie but its too warm in the stable)

I've had the same. Mine is out overnight in a fly rug, then stands in naked during the day She's not going mad but gets covered in bumps and lumps that are not there when she comes in. I don't like the thougt of her being covered constantly but have ordered a cotton sheet and been using a scrim cooler while its so hot.

Sorry OP that didn't answer your question though!
My go -to hot weather fly sheets are a PE Superlite for older TB and the new girl has a Weatherbeeta Hexishield which i am really pleased with, both similar fabric but the Weatherbeeta was half the price!

My pony sweats less in her high denier cotton-like sweet itch rugs (shires highlander sweet itch combo) than most other horses do in the mesh ones. They're still polyester but not plastic-y if you know what I mean, I thought they were cotton until I just double-checked! Breathable and white to reflect the sun which helps a huge amount.

I have to be honest and say nothing at the moment in this heat - even taking the sweet itch rug off for the afternoon at the moment which I would never normally do but them sweating attracts the flies more. My routine at the moment is in in the morning, out in the afternoon without rugs and covered in fly spray and fly masks on and then fly rugs back on in the evening as soon as it’s cool enough to do so and before dusk when the midges come out.

I'm finding the same with the cotton like rugs. One has a aussie allrounder and one has a fieldmaster. They are cooler in those than my friends horse is in a light weight mesh rug.

Thank you for all the suggestions. I was busy all day yesterday so have only just seen the replies this morning. There's loads to look at here though so I'm going to go through them all and hopefully will find something that looks like it will do the job :)
