Nope, Still Can't Get On With the New Layout Thingy

I seem to be doing a lot of lurking at the moment, feel like a stalker. Dont like it at all but where else will we all go. Am missing the comaradary(sp) we had on old forum

I think the shorter pages makes it much easier for people's posts to vanish off the first page without any views or replies and get lost.

It does seem extremely quiet on HHO since the upgrade, compared to how it used to be. I actually had set the old forum, so that new posts bumped the thread to the top of the first page but, as I recall it, I also had it set on showing something like 60 posts on each page. So like Dwi mentioned, I think one big problem is the shorter pages, with longer pages, I could usually just scroll down to find the other posts that had caught my eyes...

So I'm not a fan of the new layout either, not that I dislike everything but I preferred it as it used to be, where most people was happy with their own setting. And I will dislike the upgrade even more, if it makes users like MrsMozart and Hadfos leave.

I don't like the new set out either and am posting less, even lurking less, this new thingy means that serious questions get lost and the posts that get most attention are the ranty ones!

I concur! There are some seriously good questions/threads and they are lost in the mix! Some of the threads have had more views than the old forum showed for an entire page of threads. Okay, so maybe a slight exageration, but you get the gist.

I do indeed get your gist :) I wonder if admin, of the other bods who sort out technical stuff could please make it all better again. :)

That would be soooooooooooooooooo nice :D. I would be a happy bunny and be spreading hot choccies like largesse :)

Right, off to sleep now. Didn't realise it was so late!:cool::rolleyes:

Sweet dreams y'all :)

Nope, I can't get to like it either, and I've tried. Its really only the posts not being in order that I dislike so much. Wish they would fix that one thing. Although I suspect that unless the default was for the posts to appear in that way it would still lose a little of the essence of the old board, but still it would be a massive improvement. Perhaps we should ask Admin?

I noticed the numbers of viewers had gone up massively too. I think either the old board was mis-counting or this one is.

I'm glad it's not just me. I find it so confusing. Also I 've not yet found the button to go back to the index, other than using the back arrow. TBF though I've not bothered to read the FAQs. It's annoyoing too that you can't see who the response is to. I am losing interest in this forum, which is such a shame as it used to be great for advice and the trolls were sometimes amusing too.

I agree about missing the return to Index button, although I wondered if it was just me and it is there somewhere but I haven't found it.

Another vote for keeping posts in their order of posting..... I would love to carry on reading some but have lost them (I assume because they weren't getting huge numbers of replies?), it's really annoying.

Glad it's not just me!! Logged on after the changes, didn't like it and this is the first time been back since :(

The return to index button is sorely missed, I used it all the time, can't work out how to get around without it, don't want to use last/next thread as may not be interested in them :(

There was a guy on here when it first changed ( can't remember any details & obviously can't find it now!!) who was saying he can't get on with it at all. I agreed, I just can't find anything and the posts I have posted have had very few replies compared to what they used to. I don't spend hardly any time on here now either whereas I used to waste hours browsing. What a shame isn't it - I'm of the view if it ain't broke don't fix it!!

I'm not sure what everyone is having a problem with? Where are the posts/threads disappearing to?

There are numbers at the bottom of the page to take you from page 1 to 2 to 3 etc...

If you want to change the way threads are presented then click on User CP then Edit Options scroll waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay down that page and you'll find a bit that says
Thread Display Mode
Here you can choose the display mode for threads. For a full explanation of the modes, please view this help page.
Thread Display Mode:

with a drop down menu with options of Linear - oldest first; linear - newest first; threaded; hybrid.
choose the option you want, scroll to the bottom of the page and click on save changes

Thread Display Options

Can I change the order of posts?

You have a choice over how you view threads. When you're in a thread, look at the top bar. On the right hand side you'll see 'Display Mode'. Click on this and it lets you change how posts are ordered.

You have three choices:

Linear Mode - posts are displayed chronologically, usually from oldest to newest. Posts are shown in a flat mode so that many posts can be viewed simultaneously. It is possible to change the ordering by changing your preferences in the User CP

Threaded Mode - a tree is shown along with every post. This shows you the relationship each post has to the others. It's easy to see who responded to whom. Only one post is shown at a time. By clicking on a single post in the post tree, the page will show that post and all posts made in response to it.

Hybrid Mode - This is a mixture of the linear and threaded modes. The post tree is displayed as in the threaded mode, but many posts are shown at the same time as in the linear modes.

Viewing New Posts or Today's Posts

How can I see the latest posts?

There are two ways to quickly view recently created or updated threads.

If you are not logged in, the 'today's posts' link will show a list of all threads that have been created or updated in the last 24 hours.

If you are logged in, the 'Today's Posts' link will change to 'New Posts', which gives you a listing of all threads that have been created or updated since your last visit.

The administrator can also set up the forums so that each thread you read is marked in the database. If this option is set, then new threads (or threads with new posts) will not be marked as read until you have actually read them.

There is a built-in time limit to this, however, that will automatically mark all threads as 'read' after a set number of day, whether you really have read them or not. The default setting is 10 days, but the administrator could make this higher or lower.

Thread Tools

What are thread tools?

At the top of each thread, there is a link called 'Thread Tools'. By clicking on this link, a menu will appear with a number of options:

* Show Printable Version - this will show you a page with the thread post content in a reduced graphics format that is more 'printer friendly'.
* Email this Page - if you think the thread may be interesting to someone else, you can forward a link to it to their email address.
* Subscribe (or Unsubscribe) from this Thread - by subscribing to a thread, you will receive periodic email updates on recent activity within it. Click here for more information on subscriptions.
* Adding a Poll - if you started the thread, you can add a poll to it with this option. Click here for more information on polls.

Hi, have you worked out how to do this :D:o:confused::(:) yet?

I think you go to user cp - edit options, then all the way at the bottom is:

basic editor or standard editor = put it on standard - save options ... I hope this is right:rolleyes:

This is one of the things I like about the new forum :).

I want the posts to display as the last thread posted at the top, like it was on the old forum. It suits my way of wandering about the forum and means I know roughly where a thread is that I didn't have time to read and want to go back to is :). The way it's set up now doesn't allow for that. It's the only thing I want changing, I can cope with everything else and indeed like some of the other things, just not enough for them to make up for the viewing layout :(. I know that one can change it (bottom left corner), but having to do it every time one posts or moves Boards makes one less likely to post :(.

i`m not on here so much,it has become a chore.
another forum i go on has the same layout but because it is not so busy it is easier to keep up with.

For everyone missing the back to index button, you have to go up to the top of the page and click on New Lounge, or The first Horse and Hound Forums if you want the main index.

I still don't like this new layout either.:(

I am the biggest Techno/Forum-phobe in the world, and really don't understand this new forum.

However, have found the 'Forum Jump' bar - at the very bottom/right of the screen when on a thread. Lets you change to a different section, or stay on the same one.

Took me ages to find the PM's though - by which time I had several that were way out of date!! Bring back the flashing envelope!!!!!!
