So, this weekend we decided to venture beyong the boundaries of Kent / Sussex, armed with our £1.80 toll for the Dartford Crossing, we ventured to Norton Heath for a 2 day jumping fest, of Amateur Champs 2nd Round Qualifiers.

This was our first venture to Essex, and thus our first venture to Norton Heath, and I have to say, we were mightily impressed with the facilities on arrival. We settled the horses into their stabling for the weekend, and got ourselves entered for the necessary classes.

Trike was entered for one class on saturday...the 1m Amateur National Champs 2nd Round. There was additional pressure in the form of Kelly1982 (Trike's former owner) who was there competing her noew hossy
grin.gif
Anyway, Saturday was not going to be one of Trike's better days
frown.gif
He felt stiff coming off the lorry, and never really got going forward. When it came to our turn to jump, Trike entered the arena and his eyes literally popped out on stalks
shocked.gif
It was all I could do to get a canter out of him and he is probably the first horse ever to jump a 1m BSJA track from a trot
blush.gif
Despite his problems, the only fault he made was a runout through the combination at No. 4...middle part...which he simply couldn't jump from a trot lol! So a disappointing 4 faults but could have a been a lot worse
smirk.gif

Bo came next in the 2-phase 1.10m. This was the first 1.10m we'd jumped since August, and we had a few confidence issues lurking in the back of our minds...particularly regarding back rails of oxers
shocked.gif
Anyway, he came out firing on all guns, and jumped a super double clear
grin.gif
We didn't push it against the clock but were satisfied with a decent DC. As it turned out, we were the slowest of 9 DC's in a field of 43, so they paid out 8 places....we thus missed a prize by one place
frown.gif

So, full of enthusiasm from the 1.10m, and confident that we had jumped 1.20m in the 2nd phase, we entered Bo for the 1.20m
blush.gif
Perhaps we should have realised that as this was a 'Last Chance' Amateur Champs 2nd Round (qualifying direct to the national finals!) that it might not perhaps be the straight-forward 1.20m we had been hoping for
tongue.gif
As they were building the course, I was literally cr@pping myself ! This was a seriously LARGE 1.20m...and when we came to walk the course it appeared that it was more of a 1.25m / 1.30m than a 1.20m
shocked.gif
Anyway, I hold my had p, and say, I decided before I jumped the class that there was no way I was going to get round
frown.gif
And so it was....I didn't get a good stride to No.1, which meant we were fighting to No.2 and had it down....round the corner to No.3...the first real test...a double of upright (1.20m) to oxer (1.20m+) off 2 forward strides...Bo backed off, I kicked, he said stuff you.......and I went over the handlebars
blush.gif
The photographer has a lovely sequence of me going through the motions as I turned a somersault lol! So, not a great a end to the day, but not a great surprise either :smirk.

So, onto Sunday, and the 90cm warm-up for Trike before we got down to business in the 90cm Am Champs 2nd Round. Well, he went much better than saturday, although I still felt I was having to ride him forward so much more than I do at home. Anyway, we were clear to the last ( a tricky little stile), where I saw the long one and took it....but he unfortunately had it down
frown.gif
So, onto the 2nd round itself, and again going much better than before, but just had the most unfortunate of rubs at No.4 ! I had taken a slight pull off the corner causing him to put the extra stride in and he just had the back rail
frown.gif
At this point I was starting to think nothing was going our way...Bo had a chance ride in the 90cm Am 2nd Round from an earlier qualification at Crockstead. So, I was starting to believe that I might actually like to get him qualified for the national finals.....he'd been on fire in teh 1.10m the day before, and this horse rarely has a pole......so what does he go and do.....has the back rail off the first fence...GRRR!!! Jumped a super round apart from that lol!

Finally, onto the last class of the day for Bo which was another 1.10m. This time it was bang upto height, and we went in full of confidence. He jumped a lovely round apart from a small hesitance at No.4 which caised him to take the back pole (
frown.gif
)...so...you guessed it....4 faults
frown.gif

We jumped 7 classes over the weekend.....in 5 of them we had 4 faults....in one we were DC but missed a placing by 1 place, and in the other we got ELIM
shocked.gif

A frustrating weekend for sure, but Norton Heath is a great venue and is to be recommended to anyone thinking of going there. We will certainly be going back...but for now, chasing a 2nd Round at Sands Farm next weekend or somewhere else before the end of the month

Here's a couple of photo's from the weekend :-

If you got this far, well done and thank you...if not....you don't really care what I say do you
tongue.gif

Awwwwwwww bittersweet - you have my blood pumping for competitiveness now tho! The pics are both great and hte horses look happy and alert
laugh.gif

Hope you do get those qualifications you need
laugh.gif

Thanks Weezy...we had a really enjoyable weekend....but as they say...that's showjumping
shocked.gif

Ironically, we probably wouldn't bother making the trip to Arena Uk even if we did qualify for the finals...as we have a late night commitment the friday before, and the chance of a couple of Blue Chip qualifiers at Merrist Wood the same weekend.

Get yourself out there and competing again though....it's a great buzz
smile.gif

LOL! Karen, I could put up with one 4 fault round....but 5 in a weekend !? S*ds law and all that lol!

You know, they get more similar every week too....but there is only one Bo
wink.gif

My, Trike is a lovely looking horse. Let me know when you're fed up of him...

You should consider eventing Rambo, we don't get so despondant over four faults!

Could someone clarify for me - having been to NH several times for outdoor showjumping I always assumed the indoor they jumped in was the one the caf looks over, however this looks different... so have I been wrongly assuming where the winter season stuff takes place?!

LOL!

You can have Trike tomorrow if your thighs are strong enough
wink.gif

As for eventing Rambo...well that's on the cards for next spring, but to be honest, he's too good a SJ'er to take that seriously
shocked.gif

That indoor is the one that is overlooked by the canteen (and bar
tongue.gif
)....photographer was stood in the middle looking back towards the viewing gallery
smile.gif

Was waiting to see your report for the Sunday, shame on the 4 faults but in all fairness you did a lot better than most. No-one really seemed to have a good weekend did they.

The pictures are great though
smile.gif
Where did you find them or did you end up buying them??

Oh I really enjoyed that, got all excited for you
grin.gif

Shows just go like that dont they? I am thrilled to hear that Bo seems to be gaining confidence all the time - perhaps after walking the course you should have withdrawn from the 1.20, however, sometimes you just have to push yourself out of your comfort zone. But good to hear that he jumped well again in the 1.10 the following day
smile.gif
a few more of them and I am sure he will be fine again at 1.20m
smile.gif

The pictures are fab! Trike and Bo are so handsome
smile.gif

Well done hun! good luck at the next one.

Vx

We ended up buying them....they were the nice ones
smile.gif
I forgot to check the photo's of the 1.10m on sunday, but the ones from the 90cm's weren't very good at all...all dangling legs and mis-timed photo's lol!

LOL!

Hindsight is a wonderful thing, but you are right. I should have withdrawn before the 1.20m. I was in no fit state mentally to go in and do him justice
shocked.gif

Kelly1982 will tell you....she walked the course with me....I was talking myself out of it all the way round
grin.gif

Ha ha yeah he was, me and his wife were trying to persuade him that it wasn't as bit as he was making out when the whole time we were looking at each other as if to say 'OMG' LOL.

Oh no! A real mixed weekend then?! But great news about Bo in the 1.10m, been a long time since he jumped a double clear in a track that size hasn't it? Hopefully the 1.20m hasn't put him off at all!

Glad you had a good weekend anyway, I know the feeling of trotting around the course, although Baby was cantering round on Sat she kind of stalled before each fence! LOL! Got us round until the last fence, a double with a big oxer going and in and vertical going out, couldn't reach for that back rail! LOL
grin.gif

Onwards and upwards

LOL!

It's been a long time since he last jumped a 1.10m, let alone a DC in one
shocked.gif
The last 1.10m's we jumped were in July just before we found out about his virus
frown.gif

I don't think he's suffering too badly from his experiences in the 1.20m....he came out jumping well on the sunday so no real harm done....thankfully
grin.gif

Well done - sounds like the horses both went well even if you had an unlucky bout of fourfaultitis. That must be your quota of poles down all out of the way for the rest of the season then!

Glad you had a good weekend.

Bad luck for the 4fault rounds! That is very annoying!
mad.gif

Nice to hear Bo went well though
smile.gif
good news, even if he wasn't so impressed with the 1.20m class the double clear in the 1.10m is good!

Thank you - a brill entertaining read for a Monday morning! Frustrating I know for you, but as long as you came away happy so what!

Is that Bo in the photos, I don't know why but he looks familiar, did he come from the South East somewhere?

Thank you
grin.gif

The second piccie is Bo, the first one is Trike...I go in for matching sets lol!

If you compete BSJA at Golden Cross, Crockstead, Royal Leisure, Pyecombe or Duckhurst you may well have seen Bo on the circuit. He's been in the South East since about June 2005
